Playing Professional Football
Robert Thomas started his professional football journey in 2014. He was not chosen in the main draft, so he signed with a team as an undrafted free agent. This means a team can sign a player who wasn't picked by any team during the official draft.
Washington Redskins Team
Robert first joined the Washington Redskins in May 2014. He was part of their team during training camp. Sometimes, players are moved to the "practice squad." This is a group of players who train with the main team but don't play in games unless they are moved to the active roster. Robert was on the practice squad and was later moved to the main team for a short time. He signed a "futures contract" at the end of 2014, which meant he would play for them the next season. However, he was released by the Redskins in September 2015.
Moving to Other Teams
After leaving the Redskins, Robert played for several other teams:
- The Seattle Seahawks signed him to their practice squad in September 2015.
- Then, the New England Patriots added him to their practice squad in November 2015.
- In December 2015, the Miami Dolphins signed him. He was later placed on injured reserve, meaning he couldn't play due to an injury.
- In April 2016, the Carolina Panthers picked him up. He was released by them before the regular season started.
New York Giants Team
Robert joined the New York Giants in September 2016. He played his first game for the Giants in October. In November, he made his first career sack against the Cincinnati Bengals. A sack is when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. He signed another contract with the Giants in 2017. He was released by the Giants in September 2018.
Buffalo Bills Team
In September 2018, Robert signed with the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. He was later moved to their active roster to play in games. He was released and then re-signed to the practice squad again. In 2019, he was placed on injured reserve because of a knee injury and was later released from the team.
