Robotomy is an American animated television series. It was made by Michael Buckley and Joe Deasy for Cartoon Network. The show aired from October 25, 2010, to January 24, 2011. It is about two teenage robot outcasts, Thrasher and Blastus. They try to survive high school on their home planet, Insanus.

The series was produced by Cartoon Network Studios and World Leaders Entertainment. Christy Karacas, who also created Superjail!, helped produce and direct it. The creators had many ideas rejected before Robotomy was finally accepted.

Story of Robotomy

This image shows the characters, with Thrasher (left) and Blastus (right) in front.

Thrasher and Blastus are two robot teenagers. They live on a planet called Insanus. This planet is full of robots who try to hurt each other for no clear reason. Thrasher and Blastus are a bit less violent than their classmates. They just want to get through high school.

Thrasher (voiced by Patton Oswalt) is a tall, thin robot. He wants to win the heart of a pretty robot named Maimy. Blastus (voiced by John Gemberling) is a short, round robot. He mostly wants to be popular. Unlike most robots on Insanus, Blastus is kind and doesn't like to cause trouble. His mom doesn't always approve of this. But when he tries to be cool, he often acts without thinking. Thrasher is usually calm, but he often gets pulled into Blastus's wild plans.

Other characters include their schoolmates and teachers. Weenus (voiced by Michael Sinterniklaas) is a smart but mean robot. He is even less popular than Thrasher and Blastus. Dreadnot (voiced by Dana Snyder) is a teacher at Harry S. Apocalypse High. He enjoys making his students suffer. The principal, Thunderbite (also voiced by Snyder), is a huge, skull-shaped robot. When not causing pain, she acts sweet and motherly.

Megawatt (also voiced by Sinterniklaas) is a rich, spoiled robot. Girls like him, but he often blows them up. Thrasher doesn't like that Megawatt is dating Maimy. Tacklebot (Roger Craig Smith) is Megawatt's strong friend. He is mean and aggressive towards Thrasher and Blastus.

How the Show Was Made

American author Michael Buckley
Michael Buckley (shown here) worked with Joe Deasy to create ideas for the show.

Robotomy was created by Michael Buckley and Joe Deasy. It was made by World Leaders Entertainment in New York. The show's first name was Horrorbots.

Cartoon Network first asked Buckley to create a show in 2007. He asked Deasy for help. They came up with five ideas, but none were chosen. Six months later, they tried again with new ideas, but these also failed. After another six months, they realized they were trying too hard to guess what the network wanted. They decided to just submit a rough idea for Robotomy. To their surprise, it was accepted! Buckley described the show as a mix of Superbad, Transformers, and WWE.

The animation style for Robotomy was special. It was different from other shows made by World Leaders, like The Venture Bros.. The team that animated Robotomy also worked on Chowder. This team focused on funny movements and timing. They used "squash and stretch" animation. This means characters can stretch or squish to make movements look more lively.

The show's co-executive producer, Christy Karacas, has a unique art style. He wanted "very clean polished lines" for the robots. Karacas said the show's look was inspired by science fiction, robotics, and rock and roll. For the planet Insanus (which was first called Killglobe), the creators imagined it as a place of constant chaos. This is why the ground is covered in weapons. The sky is always dark, and the land looks scarred. Karacas especially enjoyed designing all the different robots. He made them in many sizes and shapes.

The colors in the show were very important for its look. Karacas was inspired by artists like Paul Klee and Katsuhiro Otomo. He also liked the idea of fluorescence, which means glowing colors. The team wanted a "bold, fresh look" for their world. So, they used a simple color palette. This helped draw attention to the lines of the drawings. They avoided bright primary colors. Instead, they chose more secondary colors. They added "pop colors" to make scenes stand out. These colors looked like glowing neon lighting. They also added reflections to floors and rough textures to backgrounds.
