What is Chowder About?
The story of Chowder follows the main character, Chowder. He is a young, hopeful cook working for Mung Daal's catering business. Chowder is usually happy and carefree. However, his actions often lead him into crazy situations. This happens a lot because he is always hungry and sometimes forgets things.
His guardians, Mung and Truffles Daal, try to help him. Shnitzel, a strong rock monster who works for Mung, also helps. Kimchi, Chowder's funny pet, is there too. They all try to help Chowder become a great chef. But his wild adventures often get in the way!
Chowder also has to deal with Panini. She is a girl who really likes Chowder. She even says he is her boyfriend, even though they are not dating.

Meet the Characters
Did you know that every character in the show is named after a type of food or dish?
Main Characters
- Chowder (voiced by Nicky Jones): Chowder is a cute, chubby purple creature. He is a mix of a cat, bear, and rabbit. He works as a cooking apprentice for Mung Daal. Chowder lives with Mung and his wife, Truffles. He sleeps in a room above their catering business. Chowder dreams of becoming a great chef. But he acts on impulse and is often scatterbrained. He is always hungry and will eat anything, even food meant for customers! In the final episode, an adult Chowder takes over the catering company. He gets his own apprentice and marries Panini. He also becomes a father to 50 babies!
- Mung Daal (voiced by Dwight Schultz): Mung is the older chef who owns the catering company. He is Chowder's cooking teacher. Mung has been cooking for a very long time, over 386 years! He is a light blue humanoid with a big nose and ears. His name comes from the Indian dish mung daal. In the final episode, Mung retires with Truffles. He leaves the catering business to Chowder.
- Shnitzel (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson and John DiMaggio): Shnitzel is a 38-year-old taupe (gray-brown) rock monster. He is a professional chef at Mung Daal's company. Most of the time, he only says "radda," which means "okay." He is usually the calm one among the excited characters. Shnitzel often gets stuck with hard work or cleaning because he is super strong. Even though Chowder's antics annoy him, Shnitzel really cares for Chowder. In the final episode, Shnitzel leaves the catering company. He lives a happy life with his wife, Endive.
- Truffles Daal (voiced by Tara Strong): Truffles is a mushroom pixie/fairy and Mung Daal's wife. She manages the business side of Mung's catering company. She can be very bossy. The show's creator, C. H. Greenblatt, based Truffles on his own mother. In the final episode, Truffles retires with Mung. It's possible Panini takes over her job.
- Kimchi (voiced by C. H. Greenblatt): Kimchi is Chowder's pet. He lives in a cage next to Chowder's bed. Kimchi is a cloud of gas. He likes smells that others find unpleasant. He "talks" by making funny sounds. Kimchi usually seems to have no feelings. But in one episode, "Stinky Love," he shows he has opinions. We don't know what happens to Kimchi in the final episode. He probably still lives with Chowder.
- Gazpacho (voiced by Dana Snyder): Gazpacho is a woolly mammoth who runs a store. He sells strange foods and ingredients at the farmer's market. He often gives Chowder good advice. Gazpacho lives with his very bossy mother, who is never seen. His worst enemies are ninjas. Greenblatt named him after the cold soup gazpacho. In the final episode, Gazpacho closes his stand and becomes a traveler. He later opens a Comedy Night Club, following his dream.
- Panini (voiced by Liliana Mumy and Grey DeLisle): Panini is a 12-year-old pink cabbit (cat-rabbit mix). She has a big crush on Chowder and tells him all the time. Chowder does not like her back and always says, "I'm not your boyfriend!" Panini is an apprentice to Ms. Endive. She gets jealous if she sees Chowder with another girl. In the last episode, Chowder finally likes Panini back. They get married and have many children. Panini's name means "sandwiches" in Italian. In the final episode, Panini is married to Chowder and is a mother of 50 kids. She likely takes over Truffles' old job.
- Gorgonzola (voiced by Will Shadley): Gorgonzola is a young green opossum. He is an apprentice candle holder with a grumpy attitude. He is jealous of Chowder because Chowder has a better job. He wears torn brown clothes and has a melting candle on his head. He is always trying to get money. Even though Gorgonzola is often mean to Chowder, Chowder sees him as a good friend. In the final episode, Gorgonzola runs a very successful company, probably related to candle holding.
- Ms. Endive (voiced by Mindy Sterling): Ms. Endive is a smart but snobby character. She is a mix of a carrot, anteater, and elephant. She teaches cooking to Panini very strictly. She is usually shown as being very big. She often argues with Mung Daal, who she sees as her rival. It was later shown that Ms. Endive is in love with Shnitzel. In the final episode, Endive lives a happy life with her husband, Shnitzel.
Other Characters
- Kiwi (voiced by C. H. Greenblatt): Kiwi is a pink creature who looks very real. He often gives advice to Chowder and his friends. He also sometimes tells parts of the story.
- Ceviche (voiced by Elan Garfias): Ceviche is a young yellow goat. He is an apprentice to Paté and Panini's best friend. He loves aerobic dancing and is very kind. He is good friends with Panini and Chowder.
- Paté (voiced by John DiMaggio): Paté is a tall, strong ballet dance master and opera singer. He has green hair and a deep voice. He is Ceviche's teacher.
- Chestnut (voiced by Tone Loc and John DiMaggio): Chestnut is a tiny, blue horned imp. He has a deep, rough voice but is surprisingly strong. He often sings little songs to himself, like "Dinka-loo, Dinka-lee."
- Reuben (voiced by Paul Reubens): Reuben is a pig who is a conman. He tries to trick others and steal from them.
- Mr. Fugu (voiced by Bob Joles): Mr. Fugu is a floating balloon who is Mung's most frequent customer. He is even more greedy than Chowder! He is often with his helper, Foie Gras.
- Sgt. Hoagie (voiced by Diedrich Bader): Sgt. Hoagie is a dog who works as a police officer in Marzipan City.
Chowder's Impact on Culture
In 2019, the music artist Lil Nas X made a music video. It was for a remix of his song "Panini". He named it after the Chowder character, Panini. Later, he made another music video for a remix of his song that featured characters from Chowder. Even though C. H. Greenblatt wasn't involved, he liked the video and praised it on his blog.
