A Look Back: Rochedale South's History

The name Rochedale comes from the Roche family. They settled in the area in 1868. The family grew grapes and citrus fruits in the 1870s. The name Rochedale has been used since the 1880s.

In 1952, the Gill family started a poultry farm and piggery here. By 1967, they developed the land into the first area with a modern sewage system. They named some streets after towns and places in England. This is where the family came from in 1951. Some of these street names include Ridgeway Street, Green Way, Edgeware Drive, Gills Close, and Hindmarsh Court.

The Strathlands shopping centre opened in 1970 on Underwood Road. Later, it was renamed Rochedale Shopping Village. As more people moved to the area, new churches were built.

Rochedale South officially became its own suburb on August 1, 1979. It was created by splitting off from the larger Rochedale area.
