Roger Michael Humphrey Binny (born on July 19, 1955) is a famous former Indian cricketer. He is currently the 36th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Before this, he was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association from 2019 to 2022.

Binny was a key player in the Indian team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was also the top wicket-taker for India in that tournament. He repeated this success in the 1985 World Championship of Cricket. Later, he coached the Indian Under-19 team to victory in the 2000 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He has also worked as a national selector and for the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The Indian team won the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 while Binny was the president of BCCI.

Early Life and Family Connections

Roger Binny was born in Bengaluru, which was then part of the Mysuru State. He is the first Anglo-Indian person of Scottish background to play cricket for India.

Following in His Footsteps

His son, Stuart Binny, also became a cricketer. Stuart played for the Karnataka cricket team and later for the India national cricket team. He also played in the Irani Trophy, a special cricket tournament in India.

Roger Binny's Cricket Career

Roger Binny is well-known for his amazing bowling skills. He was the highest wicket-taker in two major tournaments. He took 18 wickets in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He then took 17 wickets in the 1985 World Series Cricket Championship in Australia.

Test Cricket Debut

Binny played his first Test cricket match in Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This was against Pakistan in 1979. He had a unique bowling style because he used to be a javelin thrower. He was also a good all-rounder, scoring 46 runs in his first match.

Key Bowling Performances

Binny became a very useful Test bowler. He helped India win a match against England in 1986 by taking seven wickets. In 1987, he had his best Test figures against Pakistan in Calcutta, taking 6 wickets for 56 runs. He and fellow fast bowler Karsan Ghavri helped take the shine off the new ball, making it easier for India's spin bowlers.

All-Rounder Skills

Binny was also known for his strong batting when the team needed it most. He, along with Ghavri and Madan Lal, often saved matches for India. In 1983, he scored an unbeaten 83 runs against Pakistan in Bengaluru. This was part of a record 155-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Madan Lal. Binny was tall and athletic, making him an excellent fielder too.

World Cup Hero

Even though he was often in and out of the Indian team, Binny proved how valuable he was during the 1983 Cricket World Cup in England. Under the leadership of Kapil Dev, Binny and Madan Lal helped India win its first World Cup title. Binny took a record 18 wickets in that tournament.

Coaching and Administration Roles

After his playing career, Roger Binny moved into coaching and cricket administration.

Coaching Success

In January 2000, Binny coached the India national under-19 cricket team to victory. They won the 2000 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Future star players like Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh were part of that winning team. Two years later, he coached younger players (Under-16s). He helped develop talents such as Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, and Irfan Pathan.

Cricket Administration

Binny served in the management of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. In September 2012, he was appointed as a national selector. He later stepped down from this role in 2015.

On October 18, 2022, Roger Binny was elected as the president of the BCCI without anyone opposing him. He took over from Saurav Ganguly. In December 2023, Binny was also chosen to lead an eight-member committee. This committee's job is to help grow and guide the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
