The Roger Williams National Memorial is a special park in Providence, Rhode Island. It remembers Roger Williams, who helped start Rhode Island in 1636. This park celebrates his fight for religious freedom. Roger Williams was told to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony because of his beliefs. He then started a new colony where everyone could worship freely. This park is one of the smallest national parks in the United States.

What Does the Roger Williams Memorial Look Like?
The Roger Williams National Memorial is a park about 4.5 acres (1.8 hectares) in size. It is located near the Moshassuck River in Providence. The park is at the bottom of College Hill, which is a very old and important part of the city.
The park has an open grassy area with trees on its south side. The northern part of the park is more designed. Here you will find the visitor center. It is in an old building called the Antram-Gray House. There is also a parking area on the west side. Important spots in the northern section include Bernon Grove and the place where Roger Williams found a spring. This spring helped him choose the spot for his new settlement.
The park's visitor center has exhibits and a video. They teach you about Roger Williams and how Rhode Island was founded. You can also get information about other historic places in Providence.
How Did This Park Become a National Memorial?
A national memorial is a special place that honors a person or event. The Roger Williams National Memorial was officially made a national memorial on October 22, 1965. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
The park was built in the late 1970s. This happened after the land was bought and old buildings were removed. For many years, this was the only National Park System site in Rhode Island. In 2014, the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park also became part of the National Park Service.
