Roman Shirokov's Football Journey
Early Club Days
Before joining Zenit Saint Petersburg, Shirokov played for many different clubs. These included FC Khimki, Rubin Kazan, and Saturn Moscow Oblast. He also played for FC Vidnoye, FC Istra, Torpedo-ZIL Moscow, and CSKA Moscow's youth team.
Playing for Zenit Saint Petersburg
Shirokov started his first season at Zenit Saint Petersburg as a centre-back. This happened because their coach, Dick Advocaat, needed to fill spots in the defense. Zenit had lost a player and another was injured. Later, Shirokov moved to play as a midfielder, which is his usual position.
Time with Spartak Moscow
On 18 July 2014, Shirokov joined Spartak Moscow. He signed as a free agent, meaning his old contract had ended. After recovering from an injury, he played his first game for Spartak on 26 October 2014. He scored a goal that helped his team tie the game 1–1 against Lokomotiv Moscow.
In January 2015, he was loaned back to FC Krasnodar. During the 2015–16 season, Shirokov didn't play much for Spartak. This was because of a rule in his contract. If he played a certain number of minutes, the club would owe him more money. The head of the RFU, Vitaly Mutko, said it was unfair. On 23 January 2016, his contract with Spartak ended by agreement.
Return to CSKA Moscow
On 9 February 2016, Shirokov went back to his first club, CSKA Moscow. He signed a contract until the end of the 2015–16 season. However, his contract was not extended after that season.
Playing for Russia
Shirokov was chosen to play for the Russian national team in Euro 2008. He started the first game against Spain as a defender. This decision didn't work out well, and Russia lost 1–4. After that game, he didn't play for the rest of the tournament.
Later, after playing well as a midfielder for Zenit, he was called back to the national team in 2010. He played in a friendly game against Bulgaria. He was also part of the UEFA Euro 2012 team. In their first game, he scored a goal against the Czech Republic, helping Russia win 4–1.
In 2014, he was chosen for Russia's 2014 FIFA World Cup team. But he had to leave the squad on 6 June because of an injury.
How Roman Shirokov Played
Shirokov was known as a "deep-lying midfielder." This means he played in the middle of the field, helping to defend but also moving forward to score goals.
Life After Playing Football
On 5 June 2018, Shirokov became the deputy general director for sports at Dynamo Moscow. He left this role on 1 May 2019.
In August 2020, during an amateur game, an incident occurred involving Shirokov and a referee. This led to a legal case, and Shirokov was found guilty by a Moscow court. He was sentenced to 100 hours of community service. He was also temporarily suspended from his job at Match TV.
On 6 March 2023, Shirokov was named the general director of Saturn Ramenskoye. On 31 August 2023, he also became the head coach of the club.
