The Romanian War of Independence was a big fight in 1877. It was against the Ottoman Empire. This war helped Romania become a truly independent country.

On April 16, 1877, Romania and the Russian Empire made a deal. This deal let Russian soldiers travel through Romanian land. In return, the Russians promised to respect Romania's borders and its right to govern itself.

On May 21, 1877, a very important person named Mihail Kogălniceanu spoke in the Romanian parliament. He said that the people of Romania really wanted to be independent. At first, Russia did not want to help Romania fight in this war.
