Ror Wolf (born Richard Georg Wolf; June 29, 1932 – February 17, 2020) was a German writer, poet, and artist. He also used the pen name Raoul Tranchirer. Wolf wrote many different things, including audio plays, novels, and poems. He was also known for creating collages, which are artworks made by gluing different materials together.

Early Life and Education

Richard Georg Wolf, who later became known as Ror Wolf, was born in Saalfeld, Thuringia, Germany. He grew up without his father for many years. His father joined the army when Ror was six and did not return until ten years later. Ror loved reading books from his father's library, especially those by the famous German writer Wilhelm Busch.

After World War II, his family's shoe shop was taken over by the government. His mother was also held for a year. In 1951, after finishing high school, he tried to get into university but was not accepted. He then worked in construction for two years. When his university application was turned down again, Wolf decided to leave East Germany in July 1953. He moved to West Germany.

He first lived in Stuttgart, where he worked odd jobs. Later, he studied literature, sociology, and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt. There, he learned from important thinkers like Theodor W. Adorno. While studying, Wolf began publishing his writings, poems, and collages in a student magazine called Diskus.

Becoming Ror Wolf

The name "Ror" comes from letters in his real name, Richard Georg. His pen name, "Tranchirer," is his first name, Richard, spelled backward and changed a little. "Tranchirer" also means someone who "carves up" things. This idea of "cutting" was important in both his writing and his art, especially in his collages. Wolf continued his studies at the University of Hamburg in 1958. He graduated from the University of Frankfurt in 1961.

Career as a Writer and Artist

For two years, Wolf worked as a literature editor for Hessischer Rundfunk, a public radio station. After 1963, he became a full-time writer and artist. His first novel, Fortsetzung des Berichts, was published in 1964. This book showed influences from famous writers like Franz Kafka.

Wolf's first radio play was broadcast in 1971. He became well-known for his radio collages, which often focused on soccer. These plays are still aired today. In 1988, his play Leben und Tod des Kornettisten Bix Beiderbecke aus Nord-Amerika won the important Hörspielpreis der Kriegsblinden award. This play was about the life of jazz musician Bix Beiderbecke. In 2007, another audio play, Raoul Tranchirers Bemerkungen über die Stille, won the "Radio Play of the Year" award.

Ror Wolf lived in Mainz for 30 years. He passed away there on February 17, 2020.

His Works

Ror Wolf's stories often start in normal, everyday situations. But then, they suddenly change into something strange or funny, mixing humor with unusual events. He was working on an autobiography, which was also going to be a collage. His books have been published by Schöffling & Co. [de]. This publisher plans to release all of his works in a complete collection called Ror Wolf Werke (RWW).

This collection includes:

  • His poems.
  • Several volumes of his prose (which means his novels and short stories).
  • His audio plays.
  • Raoul Tranchirers Enzyklopädie für unerschrockene Leser, which is like an encyclopedia for "brave readers."

Awards and Recognition

Ror Wolf received many awards for his writing and poetry throughout his career. Some of these include the 2008 Friedrich-Hölderlin-Preis, the 2004 Kassel Literary Prize, and the Schiller Memorial Prize in 2016. He also won the Rainer-Malkowski-Preis in 2018. These awards show how much his work was valued and celebrated.
