The History of Rosebery School
Rosebery School is built on land that was given to the local area by Lord Rosebery. He also gave the land for the nearby Rosebery Park. The school started in 1927. It was formed by combining two older schools: Rosebery Grammar School for Girls and Epsom County School for Girls. On December 1, 2011, the school officially became an academy.
What Are the School Houses?
At Rosebery School, students are divided into different groups called "houses." When a new student joins, she is placed into one of these houses. She stays in that house for her whole time at the school. If a student has a sister already at the school, she will join the same house as her sister.
Names of the Houses
In 2016, the school changed the names of its houses. They are now named after inspiring women:
- Malala
- Elizabeth
- Pankhurst
- Curie
Before 2016, the houses were named after jewels: Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald. Even further back, in the 1970s, they were named Bruce, Drake, Faraday, and Raleigh.
What Do Students Wear?
Students in the lower school, from Year 7 to Year 11, wear a special uniform. This uniform includes a kilt and a navy blue jumper. The jumper has a red primrose flower on it. This flower is a symbol of Lord Rosebery's family name. Lord Rosebery opened the school on his birthday and allowed it to use his name. In the past, the uniform colours were brown and pink. These colours were chosen because they were the colours of Lord Rosebery's horse racing uniform for the Derby.
Special Focus on Math and Computers
In 2006, Rosebery School received a special award. It was recognized for its strong programs in Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This means the school has a special focus on teaching these subjects.
