Rosedale Center, often called just Rosedale, is a large shopping center in Roseville, Minnesota. It's located near many towns and major highways. This makes it easy for almost 2 million people to visit. About 14 million people come to Rosedale every year!

The mall has several big stores, known as "anchor stores." These are usually the largest shops that attract many visitors. Some of Rosedale's anchor stores include Macy's, AMC Theatres, DSW, Von Maur, JCPenney, and SeaQuest. There is also one empty anchor store space that used to be a Herberger's store.

History of Rosedale Center

The 2005 expansion added several restaurants and a large movie theater.

Plans for Rosedale Center were first announced in 1966. It was going to be a new type of shopping center, where all the stores were inside one building. The company, Dayton-Hudson Corporation, chose the Roseville, Minnesota area because many people were moving to northern Ramsey County. The land for the mall had actually been bought much earlier, in 1952, but a shopping center was never built there until Rosedale.

Rosedale Center officially opened in 1969. It was the third "dale" shopping center built by the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. The first was Southdale Center in Edina, which opened in 1956. Then came Brookdale Center in Brooklyn Center in 1962. Finally, Ridgedale Center opened in Minnetonka in 1974.

When Rosedale first opened, its main stores were Dayton's and Donaldson's department stores. In 1976, a JCPenney store was added as part of a new section called the North Wing. Another store, Montgomery Ward, also joined the mall in the 1970s.

The mall had a big update that finished in 1992. A new Dayton's store was built, and the old Dayton's building was turned into new shops. Two parking garages were also built to make it easier for people to park.

New Additions and Changes

In 2005, the empty east anchor store, which had been a Donaldson's, then a Carson Pirie Scott, and later a Mervyn's, was taken down. In its place, developers built a new outdoor shopping area. This new section, called the Plaza at Rosedale Center, opened in November 2006. It included a large AMC movie theater with 14 screens, which opened the next month.

In 2015, Rosedale Center announced another big expansion. This project added 140,000 square feet of space and opened on October 10, 2018. It included a new Von Maur department store. While the project removed some parking spaces, a new parking deck was built, adding even more spaces overall.

Despite these updates, the Herberger's store at Rosedale closed down. The company that owned Herberger's announced in April 2018 that all its stores would be closing. The Rosedale location closed for good on August 30, 2018.

Shopping Experience

The Macy's store at Rosedale Center made history in 2009. Following the success of their stores in New York, the Rosedale Macy's became the first store in Minnesota to stay open 24 hours a day during the Christmas shopping season. This allowed shoppers to visit anytime, day or night, to find gifts.
