Rosemark is a small community in Shelby County, Tennessee, USA. It's not an official city, but a place where people live and farm. In 2010, about 2,315 people lived there. It is located along Tennessee State Route 14.

A special part of Rosemark, about 115 acres big, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. This means it's a historic area called the Rosemark Historic District, recognized for its important past.

History of Rosemark

Early Settlement and Farming

The Rosemark area was first settled around the 1830s. It was originally called Richland. This name probably came from the rich, fertile soil in the area. The main activity for people living here was cotton farming.

Later, the community's name changed from Richland to Rosemark. This happened because there was another town in Tennessee already named Richland. However, some places in Rosemark still use the old Richland name today.

Growth After the Civil War

For most of its history, Rosemark was a farming community. It had a cotton gin to process cotton and other important places for the community. The first school, Richland School, opened in 1861.

After the Civil War, Rosemark grew a lot. More churches were built, and stores opened. A Masonic lodge was formed in 1892. In 1912, a local telephone company started, and a bank was created. Other businesses in the early 1900s included a blacksmith shop and a beauty parlor. A doctor also had his office in Rosemark from 1896 to 1946.

Rosemark Today

Today, Rosemark is close to the city of Memphis. It has become part of the suburban area. However, it still feels like a small, traditional rural community.

Rosemark Historic District

The special historic district in Rosemark includes 72 important buildings. These include the old cotton gin, schools, the bank, the Masonic lodge, two churches, stores, and 24 homes. The oldest building in the district is from around 1890. Most of the other historic buildings were built before 1920. Many of the homes are built in the bungalow style.

Geography of Rosemark

Rosemark is centered around the intersection of Rosemark Road and Kerrville-Rosemark Road. This area is home to several old community buildings. These include the Rosemark ARP Church, the Rosemark Pentecostal Church, and Tipton-Rosemark Academy. The academy used to be called Rosemark School.

Two main roads, State Route 14 (Austin Peay Highway) and State Route 205 (Millington-Arlington Road), also go through the community.

Notable People from Rosemark

  • Bobby Bland, a famous blues artist, was born in Barretville. This community is right next to Rosemark. He grew up living in both areas.
