History of Rosiclare

Some of the first people to settle in the Rosiclare area were outlaws. They were mostly counterfeiters from the Sturdivant Gang. This happened in the early 1800s.

Rosiclare was once known as the "Fluorspar Capital of the World." Fluorspar is a mineral used in many industries. Even Andrew Jackson, who later became president, owned a fluorspar mine here in 1835.

Large-scale mining of fluorspar started in Rosiclare in 1842. However, mining stopped when it became cheaper to buy fluorspar from other countries, like China. The Lead and Fluorspar Mining Company kept processing ore from mines in Hardin County. But it closed in 1996 because of competition from foreign companies.
