Rotterdam is a community located in Schenectady County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the city of Schenectady. In 2020, about 22,968 people lived there. Rotterdam is known as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau uses for collecting statistics.

Rotterdam has a long history! It was once part of a Dutch colony in America. The community is named after the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands. This means its name came before English settlers arrived in the area.
Exploring Rotterdam's Geography
The Rotterdam CDP is located at 42°46′57″N 73°57′26″W / 42.78250°N 73.95722°W. It includes the urban parts of the larger town of Rotterdam. This area is right next to the city of Schenectady, which is to its north and east.
To the southwest, the CDP is bordered by the New York State Thruway. The southern border is the line for Albany County. Some of the neighborhoods you can find in the CDP are South Schenectady, Coldbrook, and Carman.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Rotterdam CDP covers about 6.9 square miles (17.9 square kilometers) of land. There is almost no water area within the CDP.

As of the census in 2000, there were 20,536 people living in the CDP. These people lived in 8,492 households, with 5,876 of those being families. The population density was about 1,144 people per square kilometer (2,963 people per square mile). There were also 8,825 housing units.
Most people living in Rotterdam in 2000 were White (97.07%). Other groups included African American (1.06%), Native American (0.16%), and Asian (0.55%). About 1.03% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
