What Kinds of Round Table Pizza Are There?
Round Table Pizza has two main types of restaurants. The first kind is the traditional one. These places mostly serve delicious pizza, fresh salads, and drinks.
The second type is called Round Table Pizza Clubhouse - Pizza Pub Play. These are super fun! They have arcade games for kids and big TVs showing sports. They also have a bigger menu with more food choices and special drinks for grown-ups.
The Story of Round Table Pizza
Round Table Pizza was started by a man named William R. Larson. He was born in San Jose, California, in 1933. After serving in the U.S. Navy, William worked different jobs. These experiences helped him learn what he needed to open his own restaurant.
He opened his first pizza place in Menlo Park, California, on December 21, 1959. It was located at 1235 El Camino Real. He named his new restaurant Round Table Pizza. He chose this name because of the cool, round redwood tables he and his father built for the restaurant.
A few years later, the original Menlo Park location moved to 1225 El Camino Real. It's still there today! William's son, Bob Larson, now owns and runs that very first location.
Round Table Pizza's tasty recipes and crust quickly became very popular. Many people loved the food, and other business owners wanted to open their own Round Table Pizza places. By 1978, there were over 225 Round Table Pizza restaurants.
In 2014, the company made a deal to open 35 new restaurants in countries like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. By 2016, there were over 450 Round Table Pizza locations. You could find them in states like California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii.
In 2017, a company called Global Franchise Group bought Round Table Pizza. Then, in 2019, Round Table Pizza got a new look for its 60th birthday. They changed their logo and got a new motto: "Pizza Royalty." They also opened new restaurants in Texas for the first time that year.
Later, in 2021, Global Franchise Group was bought by FAT Brands. This company also owns other well-known restaurants like Fatburger and Johnny Rockets.
William Larson came up with the first slogan for Round Table Pizza: "share a little pizza with someone you love." Later, it changed to "The Last Honest Pizza."
In 1961, a friend of Larson's drew some pictures of King Arthur's court eating pizza. William Larson liked these drawings so much that he decided to use the King Arthur theme for his restaurants. This is why you see knights and castles in their designs!
The official logo has three banners. These banners were added in 1970. They are meant to stand for the letters "F-U-N."
For a few years, from about 2003 to 2005, Round Table Pizza had two puppet mascots named Matt and Marcus. They appeared in the company's TV commercials. In 2007, the mascot became the Pizza Knight. He was known as the "defender of family night."
