Roy Edward Campbell Jr. (born November 19, 1947) is an African-American leader in the Catholic Church. He has served as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington since 2017. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop lead a large area.

Bishop Roy Campbell's Life Story
Early Life and Education
Roy Campbell was born on November 19, 1947. His hometown was Pomonkey, Maryland. His parents were Roy Edward Campbell, Sr. and Julia Ann (Chesley) Campbell. He grew up with three brothers and two sisters.
Roy attended Bruce Elementary Public School. He also went to Shrine of the Sacred Heart School. In 1965, he graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington.
After high school, Campbell went to Howard University in Washington. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology. He also studied chemistry and anthropology.
Career Before Becoming a Priest
After college, Campbell worked as a bank teller. He worked at Suburban Trust Company in Maryland. This job helped him pay for his advanced studies. In 1992, he earned a Master of Arts degree in retail banking. He received this degree from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia.
Campbell worked in banking until 2002. At that time, he decided to become a priest.
Becoming a Priest
In 2003, Roy Campbell began studying to become a priest. He attended the Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts. He earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2007.
On May 26, 2007, Campbell became a priest. Cardinal Donald Wuerl ordained him for the Archdiocese of Washington. After his ordination, Campbell served at St. Augustine Parish in Washington. He was a parochial vicar, which means he helped the main pastor.
In 2008, Campbell became the pastor of Assumption Parish in Washington. A pastor is the main priest in charge of a church. In 2010, he moved to serve as pastor of Saint Joseph Parish in Largo, Maryland.
Serving as an Auxiliary Bishop
Pope Francis chose Campbell to be an auxiliary bishop. This appointment for the Archdiocese of Washington happened on March 8, 2017.
On April 21, 2017, Campbell officially became a bishop. Cardinal Wuerl led the ceremony. It took place at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington. Bishops Martin Holley and Barry Knestout also helped in the ceremony.
Bishop Campbell has a special symbol called a coat of arms. His coat of arms includes a lion and a tower. On March 21, 2019, Bishop Campbell was chosen to lead the National Black Catholic Congress (NBCC). He became their president, taking over from Bishop John Ricard.
