Roy Mitchell Kinnear (born January 8, 1934 – died September 20, 1988) was a well-known English character actor. He was famous for his roles in many films and TV shows. Some of his most memorable parts include Clapper in How I Won the War (1967) and Planchet in The Three Musketeers (1973). He played Planchet again in the sequels in 1974 and 1989. Sadly, he passed away after an accident while filming the last movie.
Roy Kinnear also played Henry Salt in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. He was the cruise director Curtain in Juggernaut (1974). On TV, he appeared in The Dick Emery Show (1979–1981) and sitcoms like Man About the House (1974–1975) and George and Mildred (1976–1979).

Early Life and Family
Roy Kinnear was born on January 8, 1934, in Wigan, Lancashire, England. His parents, Annie and Roy Kinnear, were from Edinburgh, Scotland. He had one sister named Marjory.
His father, also named Roy Kinnear, was a famous rugby player. He played for both Scotland and Great Britain. Sadly, his father died in 1942 at the age of 38 while playing rugby.
Roy Kinnear went to George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. When he was 17, he decided to study acting. He joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), which is a famous acting school.
Roy Kinnear's Acting Career
Roy Kinnear started his acting journey in 1955. His first role was Albert in a play called The Young in Heart. In 1959, he joined a theatre group called Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop. He performed in a play called Sparrows Can't Sing, which was later made into a film in 1963.
His first TV appearance was in a children's show called Mr. Fixit in 1959. He became more widely known after appearing on the TV show That Was the Week That Was.
Famous Film and TV Roles
Roy Kinnear appeared in many popular films and TV shows. He often worked with director Richard Lester, who was a close friend. Together, they made films like Help! (with The Beatles), A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, and the Musketeer movies.
One of his most famous roles was Mr. Henry Salt in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). He played the father of Veruca Salt, the spoiled girl who wanted everything. He also appeared in a Hammer horror film called Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) with Christopher Lee.
On television, he was in shows like Man About the House, George and Mildred, and The Dick Emery Show. He also guest-starred in The Goodies' and Ripping Yarns.
Voice Acting and Narration
Roy Kinnear also used his voice for many children's shows and animated films. He narrated and provided voices for the stop-motion TV show Bertha. He also narrated Towser.
He voiced Pipkin in the 1978 animated film Watership Down. He was also the voice of Bulk, a henchman, in the cartoon series SuperTed.
Personal Life
Roy Kinnear was married to an actress named Carmel Cryan. They had three children together. Their son, Rory Kinnear, also became a well-known actor. Their daughter, Kirsty, became a casting director. Their eldest daughter, Karina, had physical and learning disabilities. She passed away in May 2020.
His Final Years
On September 19, 1988, Roy Kinnear was filming The Return of the Musketeers in Spain. He fell from a horse during filming and was seriously injured. He broke his pelvis and had internal bleeding. He was taken to a hospital in Madrid. Sadly, he died the next day from a heart attack caused by his injuries. He was 54 years old.
He was buried in East Sheen Cemetery in London. After his death, Roy Kinnear's family took legal action against the film's production company and director. They said that the accident happened because filming was rushed. In 1991, his family received a settlement of £650,000.
Legacy
In May 1994, the Roy Kinnear Trust was created. This trust was inspired by his daughter, Karina. It helps young adults who have physical and mental disabilities.
