Roy Leslie Austin (born 1939) is an important person who served as the United States Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago for many years. He worked as a top diplomat for the U.S. government from December 2001 to December 2009.

Roy L. Austin's Journey to Diplomacy

Roy Austin was born in Kingstown, a city in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He later moved to the United States to continue his education. He became a U.S. citizen.

College Years and Studies

Roy Austin went to Yale University. There, he earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live together in groups and societies. While at Yale, he became friends with George W. Bush, who later became a U.S. President. Both of them joined a special university group called Skull and Bones.

After Yale, Roy Austin continued his studies at the University of Washington. He earned two more advanced degrees in sociology: a Master of Arts and a Ph.D..

A Career in Education

Before becoming an ambassador, Mr. Austin was a professor. He taught Sociology, Justice, and African American Studies at Pennsylvania State University. He also led important programs there. These included the Crime, Law, and Justice Program and the Africana Research Center.

Becoming an Ambassador

In 2001, President George W. Bush chose Roy Austin to be the United States Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. Mr. Austin was sworn into this important role on October 19, 2001. He served as ambassador for over eight years, leaving the position on December 18, 2009.

Roy L. Austin's Family Life

In 1967, Roy Austin married Glynis Josephine Sutherland. They have three children together. Their names are Roy L. Austin, Jr., Roger Austin, and Deborah Austin Depay.

Roy Jr., their oldest son, also worked in government. He served as a Deputy Assistant to President Barack Obama. He helped lead the White House Office of Urban Affairs, Justice, and Opportunity.
