About Canadian Coins

Who is on the front of the coins?

Since 2003, most Canadian coins have featured a picture of Queen Elizabeth II. This special picture was created by an artist named Susanna Blunt. It's on the front, or "obverse," side of the coin.

What do coin finishes mean?

Coins can have different looks, called "finishes." Here are some common ones:

  • Bullion: This finish has a shiny design against a background with fine lines.
  • Proof: Imagine a frosty design on a super shiny, mirror-like background. That's a proof coin!
  • Specimen: This finish shows a shiny design on a soft, satiny background.

Special Coin Sets

The Royal Canadian Mint sometimes releases special "specimen sets." These sets contain a collection of coins with unique features. For example, some sets might have a special version of the one-dollar coin, while others might have a special two-dollar coin.

What happened with the "$20 for $20" program?

The "$20 for $20" coin program started in 2011. It was meant to be an easy way for new people to start collecting coins. The Mint made money from these coins because the silver inside them was worth less than $20. They expected that most people would keep the coins as collectibles and not spend them.

However, the price of silver dropped a lot between 2011 and 2016. This meant that the silver in the coins became worth less than $20. Many people started returning their coins to the Mint to get the full $20 face value back. This caused the Mint to lose money.

Because of these losses, the program was stopped. The Mint has said that there is no time limit for people to exchange these coins for their face value.
