In 2023, Rudyard Township got a special title. It was named the "Snowy Owl Capital of Michigan." This means it's a great place to see these beautiful white owls.

Discovering Rudyard's Past
Rudyard is a small town within the township. It's located on M-48, close to I-75. The community was first called "Pine River."
However, there was already another town in Michigan with that name. So, in 1890, the name was changed to Rudyard. The new name was suggested by Frederick Douglas Underwood. He was an executive for the Soo Line Railroad. Mr. Underwood greatly admired a famous writer named Rudyard Kipling.
Rudyard Kipling himself even wrote back to Mr. Underwood. He mentioned the towns named Rudyard and Kipling, Michigan.
Exploring Rudyard's Location and Landscape
Rudyard Township is in the southern part of Chippewa County. This area is on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. To the south, it shares a border with Mackinac County.
Interstate 75 runs through the township. You can get to Rudyard village from Exit 373. From this exit, I-75 goes north about 22 miles to Sault Ste. Marie. It goes south about 29 miles to St. Ignace. St. Ignace is located on the Straits of Mackinac.
The total area of Rudyard Township is about 90 square miles (233.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 89.6 square miles (232.2 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.4 square miles (1.1 square kilometers), is water.

- Dryburg was once a station on the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad. It had its own post office from 1903 until 1943.
