Rufus King Jr. (born March 21, 1838 – died March 18, 1900) was a brave artillery officer who fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor, which is the highest military award in the United States.

Meet Rufus King Jr.'s Family
Rufus King Jr. was born in New York City. His father, also named Rufus King, was a graduate of the United States Military Academy (West Point). He became a brigadier general during the Civil War. Rufus King Jr.'s brother, Charles King, was also a military commander. He served in the Philippine–American War. Rufus King Jr.'s great-grandfather, Rufus King, was a very important person. He was one of the people who signed the United States Constitution.
Rufus King Jr.'s Time in the Army
Starting His Military Journey
Rufus King Jr. joined the army in April 1861. He started as a private in the 7th New York Militia. He served for three months. After that, he became a first lieutenant in the regular U.S. Army on August 5, 1861. He was assigned to the 4th U.S. Artillery.
Leading in Battle
King served with the Army of the Potomac throughout the entire Civil War. From 1864, he commanded Battery A of the 4th U.S. Light Artillery. This unit was part of the famous U.S. Horse Artillery Brigade. Lieutenant King showed great bravery during the Seven Days Battles. Specifically, during the Battle of White Oak Swamp on June 30, 1862, he was given a special promotion to captain. Even though he was only a section chief at the time, he took command of two batteries. This happened after his commander was wounded in the fight.
Life After the Civil War
When the war ended, King received another special promotion, this time to major. This was for his excellent conduct during the war. He officially became a permanent captain in 1869. Rufus King Jr. left the Army honorably on January 1, 1871. He passed away in New York on March 18, 1900. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery and Crematory in Hillside, New Jersey.

Rufus King Jr.'s Special Award
On March 22, 1898, the United States Army finally gave Rufus King Jr. the Medal of Honor. He received it for his brave actions at White Oak Swamp.
