Rushford is a small town located in Allegany County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,085 people lived there. The town is in the northwest part of Allegany County. It is also northeast of the city of Olean.

History of Rushford
The first people to settle in Rushford arrived in 1808. These early settlers were Enos Gary and his two children. The town of Rushford was officially created in 1816. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Caneadea. Later, in 1825, a section of Rushford was used to create the new town of New Hudson.
A big change happened in 1927 when Rushford Lake was created. This lake was formed by building a dam on Caneadea Creek. When the water rose, it flooded two communities: East Rushford and Kelloggville.
Famous People from Rushford
Many interesting people have connections to Rushford:
- Nelson F. Beckwith was a politician who served in the Wisconsin State Assembly.
- Hiram Bond was a successful corporate lawyer and investment banker. His farm in Santa Clara, California, was even used as the setting for the beginning of the famous book The Call of the Wild by Jack London.
- Frank W. Higgins once served as the Governor of New York.
- James McCall was a New York State Senator.
- Richard Henry Pratt was the person who started the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.
- Philip Gordon Wylie, a well-known author, married Frederica Ballard. She was born and grew up in Rushford, New York. Both of them are buried in Rushford.
- Almanzo W. Litchard (1841–1906) was a soldier, farmer, and politician. He fought for the Union during the Civil War. After the war, he bought a farm in Rushford. Later in his life, he became a member of the New York State Assembly.
Geography of Rushford
Rushford covers a total area of about 93.5 square kilometers (36.1 square miles). Most of this area, about 91.4 square kilometers (35.3 square miles), is land. The rest, about 2.0 square kilometers (0.79 square miles), is water. The main part of the town, also called Rushford, is a special area recognized by the census.
The western edge of Rushford borders Cattaraugus County. Specifically, it borders the town of Farmersville. New York State Route 243 is a main road that goes through the town from east to west.
