History of Farmersville
The first people tried to settle in the Farmersville area around 1805. However, a lasting community wasn't formed until about 1817. Farmersville officially became a town in 1821. It was created from a part of what was then called the "Town of Ischua," which is now known as Franklinville.
The Farmersville Garbage Controversy
Farmersville became well-known because of a "garbage scandal" in 2000. This happened during a political race for a New York State senator. One of the candidates, Rudy Giuliani, said that towns could refuse to take garbage from New York City. Farmersville had a contract to take garbage that they thought was bad for them. So, they decided to take Giuliani up on his offer.
However, Giuliani later said he never made that statement. This caused a big problem for Farmersville. The land where the landfill was planned has been very controversial ever since. The county that owns the land has tried to sell it many times. But they have put many rules on the land and won't lower the price, so it has not been sold.
