Machias is a small town located in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,309 people lived there. Machias is found in the northeastern part of the county, a bit northeast of the city of Salamanca.

History of Machias

People first started settling in the area of Machias around 1813. The town itself was officially created in 1827. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Yorkshire. Later, in 1847, Machias grew bigger by adding more land from Yorkshire. The town got its name from settlers who came from Machias in Maine.

Geography and Location

Machias is located at 42°25′10″N 78°29′40″W / 42.41944°N 78.49444°W / 42.41944; -78.49444.

The United States Census Bureau says that Machias covers a total area of about 106.4 square kilometers (41.08 square miles). Most of this area, 104.7 square kilometers (40.43 square miles), is land. The rest, about 1.7 square kilometers (0.65 square miles), is water.

New York State Route 16 and New York State Route 242 are two main roads that cross paths in Machias village.

Waterways and Drainage

Machias is special because it sits on a drainage basin border. This means that water in the northern part of town, like from Lime Lake, flows north. It then goes through Cattaraugus Creek to Lake Erie. From there, it travels through the Saint Lawrence Seaway all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

However, water from Ischua Creek, which is less than a mile south of Lime Lake, flows in a different direction. It goes south towards the Allegheny River. Eventually, this water joins the Mississippi River and ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. Ischua Creek flows past the southern part of Machias village.
