A Look Back: Hospital History
Ruttonjee Hospital has a long and interesting past. Its story began over 140 years ago. The hospital stands on land once used by the "Royal Naval Hospital." This older hospital was badly damaged during World War II.
In 1949, a new hospital called "Ruttonjee Sanatorium" opened. It was supported by Mr. Jehangir Hormusjee Ruttonjee. He wanted to honor his daughter, Tehmi Ruttonjee-Desai, who passed away from tuberculosis. For many years, this sanatorium was a main place for treating tuberculosis in Hong Kong. Sister Dr. Mary Aquinas Monaghan, a nun from Ireland, helped guide the hospital's growth.
By 1991, the number of tuberculosis patients had gone down. Also, new treatments meant patients could get help without staying in the hospital. So, the Ruttonjee Sanatorium became "Ruttonjee Hospital." It changed into a general hospital with 600 beds. Today, it offers many different health services to the community.
