A Look Back: Rypin's History

Rypin was founded a very long time ago, during the Middle Ages. It has been a part of Poland since the country was first established in the 10th century. From the 11th century, it was an important local center. By the 14th century, it became a county seat, meaning it was the main town for a larger area.

Becoming a Town

Rypin officially became a town in the early 14th century. After that, it was known as a royal town of the Polish Crown. This meant it was directly under the king's rule. It was an important place in the Dobrzyń Land region.

In the early 1300s, some Polish dukes from the Piast dynasty built a hospital in Rypin. They did this to honor their father, Duke Siemowit of Dobrzyń. In 1352, this hospital received special permissions and benefits from Duke Władysław the Hunchback. Rypin was also located on a busy trade route that connected Toruń with Brześć, making it a key stop for merchants.

Changes Over Time

Over the centuries, Rypin saw many changes. In 1793, after the Second Partition of Poland, the town was taken over by the Kingdom of Prussia. This was a difficult time for Poland, as parts of its land were divided among other countries.

However, Rypin later became part of the Polish Duchy of Warsaw in 1807, which was a short-lived Polish state. After this duchy ended in 1815, Rypin became part of the Russian-controlled part of Poland. During the January Uprising in 1863, Polish fighters briefly took control of the town.

After World War I, Poland finally became an independent country again, and Rypin returned to Polish rule. During the Polish–Soviet War in 1920, Rypin was occupied by Russian forces for a few days in August, but Polish forces quickly liberated it.

Rypin During World War II

When World War II began in September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Rypin was occupied by German forces until 1945. During this time, many Polish people in Rypin faced terrible treatment.

In 1939, a German police prison was set up in the town. Many local Poles were arrested, questioned, and sadly, many were killed and buried in a nearby place called Skrwilno. This was part of a terrible plan by the Germans to eliminate Polish leaders and educated people. Among those killed were 96 Polish teachers and school principals from Rypin and the surrounding area.

Many Poles were also forced to leave their homes in Rypin. Between 1939 and 1942, over 5,100 Poles were expelled from the town. Their homes were then given to German settlers. Some Poles were sent to a transit camp in Toruń and then moved to other parts of German-occupied Poland. Rypin was finally freed by the Soviet Army at the end of 1944.
