A Look at Río Hondo's Past

Río Hondo has a long history. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the United States government counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that Río Hondo barrio and another barrio called Malezas had a combined population of 1,072 people.

Protecting Nature in Río Hondo

One of the most important things about Río Hondo today is its beautiful forest land. In 2018, more than 65 acres of forest in Río Hondo barrio were bought to be protected.

This important effort was a partnership between the city of Mayagüez and a local group that works to save nature. This protected area is now called the Río Hondo Community Forest (which is Bosque Comunitario Río Hondo in Spanish). A group called Proyecto Agro Eco Turístico del Barrio Rio Hondo Inc. helps manage and take care of this forest.
