Rüdiger Nehberg (born May 4, 1935 – died April 1, 2020) was a German human rights activist, author, and survival expert. He was also known as 'Sir Vival'. He lived in Rausdorf near Hamburg, Germany. Nehberg was famous for his incredible adventures and his strong efforts to help people around the world. He often described himself as a "maverick," meaning he was an independent thinker who didn't follow the crowd.

His Life and Adventures

Rüdiger Nehberg was born in Bielefeld, Germany. After finishing school, he first became a pastry chef. But he soon became very interested in outdoor survival skills. Eventually, he sold his three bakeries. From then on, he made a living from his books and talks about his adventures.

Exploring the World

In 1972, Nehberg and two friends were among the first to travel the entire length of the Blue Nile river. They used a boat they had built themselves. Sadly, one of his friends was shot during this trip.

In 1981, Nehberg crossed Germany without any special gear. He relied only on what he could find in nature for food and shelter. A camera team followed him to record this amazing journey. In 1987, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a pedal boat. This showed his incredible determination.

Helping People: The Yanomami Tribe

Since 1980, Rüdiger Nehberg worked hard to protect the Yanomami Amerindian tribe. They live in the rainforests of South America. In 2000, he did an amazing adventure called "The Tree." He crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a fir-tree log! This daring trip helped raise awareness and money. His efforts helped create a protected area for the Yanomami tribe.

Exposing a Hoax

Nehberg was also one of the first to show that the "Tatunca Nara" story was a fraud. This story had become very popular in German and Brazilian news. A German worker named Hans Günther Hauck had moved to the Brazilian jungle. He claimed to be the leader of a secret tribe called Ugha-Mongulala. He said they lived in a hidden city called Akakor for 15,000 years.

However, neither the city nor the tribe ever existed. Still, many filmmakers and adventurers believed Nara. Sadly, three people even died during jungle trips led by Tatunca. The reasons for their deaths are still not fully known. Rüdiger Nehberg wrote a book called Der selbstgemachte Häuptling (The Self-Made Chieftain). In this book, he shared the true story of this mysterious man and his actions.

Awards and Continued Work

Because of his strong dedication to helping people, Nehberg received the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Federal Cross for Merit). This is a high award in Germany.

In November 2006, an organization called TARGET, which Nehberg helped create, held a conference in Cairo. This meeting was about important human rights issues. In 2014, he gave a TEDx talk. He spoke about his work to prevent harmful practices against girls and women.

In August 2009, Rüdiger Nehberg married his second wife.
