Södertälje Municipality (which is Södertälje kommun in Swedish) is a special area in Stockholm County, located in east-central Sweden. It's like a local government area, and its main town is Södertälje.

This municipality is unique because it touches Lake Mälaren in the north and the Baltic Sea in the south. It also shares borders with other municipalities like Nykvarn Municipality and Salem Municipality within Stockholm County. Plus, it borders Södermanland County and its towns, Gnesta and Trosa.

Södertälje Municipality was formed between 1967 and 1971. This happened when the old City of Södertälje joined with the bigger countryside and suburban areas around it. Later, in 1999, a new municipality called Nykvarn Municipality was created from a part of Södertälje Municipality.

Economy and Industry

Södertälje is home to two very important companies that help the local economy.

  • Scania AB is a world-famous company that makes trucks and buses. It provides jobs for over 9,000 people in Södertälje.
  • AstraZeneca is a large international company that makes medicines. More than 3,000 people work here.

The municipality itself is also a big employer, with over 5,600 people working for it. These jobs include teachers and people who care for the elderly.

Södertälje also has a very important waterway called the Södertälje Canal. This canal is super helpful for ships that want to travel from the Baltic Sea to the large Lake Mälaren.

People and Population

Södertälje is known for its diverse population. It has the fifth-largest number of Finnish-speaking people in Sweden, with about 11,000 residents who speak Finnish. This is about 13% of the city's population.

Many Assyrians in Sweden also live in Södertälje. When you combine the Finnish and Assyrian communities, they make up about 40% of the people living in the city.
