Salem Municipality (Salems kommun) is a small area in Stockholm County in central-east Sweden. It's a place where people live and work, and it has its own local government. The name "Salem" comes from an older name, Slæm, used in the 1200s. It was changed in the 1600s, inspired by the Biblical city of Jerusalem. The main town, or "seat," of the municipality is also called Salem.

History of Salem
Ancient Times and Early Settlements
Just like other areas around Lake Mälaren, Salem has many ancient remains. These show that people lived here as far back as the Stone Age. The church in Salem was built around the 1100s.
The Legend of Saint Botvid
Salem's history is linked to the story of Saint Botvid. He lived in the area between 1050 and 1120. A legend says that a spring appeared when a saint died. When Saint Botvid's remains were moved, his casket was placed near Lake Bornsjön. A spring started flowing there, and it still provides clear water today.
Salem Today
Becoming Its Own Municipality
Salem used to be part of the larger Botkyrka municipality from 1971 to 1974. But after many people asked for it, Salem became its own municipality again in 1983. It is now the 14th smallest municipality in Sweden by land area.
Getting Around Salem
Salem has good ways to travel. There is a train station called Rönninge. It is on the commuter train line that connects Södertälje and Märsta through Stockholm. There are also many bus lines that help people get around.
Daytime Population
About 30% fewer people are in Salem during the day. This is because many people who live in Salem work outside the municipality. Salem has the highest percentage of people in Stockholm County who work in other areas.
