Słubice is a town located in western Poland, in the Lubusz Voivodeship. It sits right on the Oder river, directly across from the city of Frankfurt (Oder) in Germany.

Until 1945, Słubice was actually a part of Frankfurt (Oder), known as Dammvorstadt. Today, it is its own town. As of 2019, about 16,705 people live in Słubice. When you count Słubice and Frankfurt together, the total population is around 85,000 people. Słubice is the main town of Słubice County and the center for the local government of Gmina Słubice. It is also part of a historic area called Lubusz Land.

History of Słubice

The name Słubice comes from an old West Slavic settlement called Zliwitz. This settlement was located east of the Brandendamm causeway, which crossed the Oder river. It was first mentioned in Frankfurt's city charter in 1253.

Early Beginnings of Słubice

Before 1249, the area was part of the Polish Lubusz Land. This land was sometimes part of the Duchy of Greater Poland or the Duchy of Silesia within the Kingdom of Poland. In 1225, Zliwitz was given special trading rights by Henry the Bearded. This meant it was an important place for merchants.

Changes in Control Over Time

In 1249, the Ascanian margraves from Margraviate of Brandenburg bought the Lubusz Land from the Silesian Duke Bolesław II the Horned. Later, in 1319, a war started over who controlled the region. The area then came under the rule of the Duchy of Pomerania.

In 1319, Wartislaw IV, Duke of Pomerania gave new special rights to the town of Frankfurt (Oder). Słubice was already a part of Frankfurt at that time. The area returned to Brandenburg in 1324. From 1373 to 1415, it was part of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown, ruled by the Luxembourg family.

Słubice After World War II

Słubice is very connected to its German sister city, Frankfurt (Oder). They were one city until 1945. After World War II, the Oder–Neisse line was drawn as the new border between Poland and Germany. This line went right through the city, splitting it into two separate towns.

Even though they are now in different countries, Słubice and Frankfurt work together on many things. For example, Słubice has a wastewater treatment plant that serves both towns. Also, the Collegium Polonicum is a part of the European University Viadrina located on the Polish side of the border. Słubice is also part of a special economic zone called Słubice-Kostrzyn.

Climate in Słubice

Słubice has an oceanic climate, which means it has mild temperatures and rainfall throughout the year. It doesn't usually get too hot or too cold.
