Nguyễn Thanh Tùng (born on July 5, 1994), known as Sơn Tùng M-TP, is a famous Vietnamese singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born and grew up in Thái Bình, Vietnam. His family noticed his singing talent when he was only two years old.

Sơn Tùng M-TP became very popular with his songs "Cơn mưa ngang qua" (2012) and "Em của ngày hôm qua" (2013). These songs helped start his amazing music career. He then released other successful songs like "Chắc ai đó sẽ về", "Lạc trôi", and "Nơi này có anh". In 2017, Tùng released his album M-tp M-TP and a book about his life called Chạm tới giấc mơ.

He worked with music companies like Văn Production and WePro Entertainment for four years. Then, in 2016, he started his own company, M-TP Entertainment. Sơn Tùng M-TP has also done big concert tours, acted in the 2014 movie Dandelion, and appeared on the TV show The Remix. Many people call him a "Prince of V-pop" because he is so popular. He has won many awards, including an MTV Europe Music Award and a Mnet Asian Music Award. In 2018, Forbes Vietnam also included him in their Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Life and Music Journey

Early Life and First Steps in Music (1994–2010)

Nguyễn Thanh Tùng was born on July 5, 1994, in Thái Bình, Vietnam. His parents are Nguyễn Đức Thiện and Phạm Thị Thanh Bình. His mother was a traditional dancer and also worked many jobs to support the family. Tùng has a younger brother, Nguyễn Việt Hoàng, who also started a music career in 2022 as Mono.

When Tùng was two years old, his family noticed he could sing well. At eight, he joined a local arts center and learned to play the electronic keyboard. Even though his parents wanted him to focus on school, Tùng loved music. He often took part in school talent shows. In 2009, he and his friends formed a group called Over Band. They wrote songs and shared them online.

In 2010, a rap artist named Hoàng Kê invited Tùng to join his hip hop group, Young Pilots. They performed in their hometown and became popular online. Around this time, Tùng started using the stage name M-TP. It first came from a nickname, but now it means "music," "talent," and "style."

Becoming a Star and Acting (2011–2015)

Tùng first wrote the song "Cơn mưa ngang qua" for his group, but he decided to record it himself. He put it on a music website in August 2011. In just two months, it was played 1.7 million times! This song's success was a big surprise for Tùng. It won an award for Song of the Month in October 2012.

In 2012, he started studying at the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City. He later took a break to focus on his career. In July 2012, he tried out for Vietnam Idol but did not make it past the first round. In November 2012, he signed a contract with Văn Production and changed his stage name to Sơn Tùng M-TP.

Between August and December 2013, Tùng released three more songs: "Nắng ấm xa dần", "Đừng về trễ", and "Em của ngày hôm qua". The song "Em của ngày hôm qua" made him a huge star. It got over 100 million plays in three months!

In June 2014, it was announced that Tùng would star in Dandelion. This movie was based on the life of singer WanBi Tuấn Anh. The film came out in December 2014 and earned a lot of money, becoming one of Vietnam's highest-grossing films. Tùng won a special award, the Golden Kite Prize, for his acting in the movie. He also sang two hit songs for the film's soundtrack: "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" and "Không phải dạng vừa đâu".

TV Shows and Starting His Own Company (2015–2017)

In January 2015, Tùng joined the TV show The Remix. He worked with a DJ and a music producer to create new versions of songs. His performances were very popular, but he left the show after six episodes due to health reasons. He released two songs from the show, "Thái Bình mồ hôi rơi" and "Khuôn mặt đáng thương."

In June 2015, he recorded "Tiến lên Việt Nam ơi!" to support Vietnam's team in the Southeast Asian Games. He also released three more songs that year: "Ấn nút nhớ... Thả giấc mơ", "Âm thầm bên em", and "Buông đôi tay nhau ra". "Âm thầm bên em" won an award for Single of the Year.

In July, Tùng had his first big concert, M-TP & Friends, in Ho Chi Minh City. All the tickets were sold out! Later that year, he won the Best Southeast Asian Act award at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards. In December 2015 and January 2016, Tùng went on his M-TP Ambition concert tour.

In April 2016, Tùng won the Singer of the Year award at the 11th Dedication Music Award. He was the youngest person to win this award. In August 2016, he released "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau." This song was the most searched song on Google Vietnam in 2016. Because of some disagreements, Tùng left WePro Entertainment in December 2016.

He then started his own company, M-TP Entertainment. In early 2017, he released three new songs: "Lạc trôi", "Nơi này có anh", and "Bình yên những phút giây". The music videos for "Lạc trôi" and "Nơi này có anh" quickly reached 100 million views on YouTube.

In September 2017, his book, Chạm tới giấc mơ, was released. It tells the story of his early life and career. Ten thousand copies were sold in just two days! Tùng also won many awards that year, including the Mnet Asian Music Award for Vietnamese Breakout Artist.

In May 2018, he released his song "Run Now" with a music video featuring Thai actress Davika Hoorne. The video won awards for Music Video of the Year. In July, Tùng appeared in a short film called Chuyến đi của thanh xuân.

In July 2019, Tùng released "Give It to Me," a song with famous rapper Snoop Dogg. The music video for this song broke a record for Vietnamese music videos, getting 25.8 million views in just one day!

From July to August 2019, Tùng went on his second big concert tour, Sky Tour. The shows in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi were completely sold out. A documentary film about the tour, Sơn Tùng M-TP: Sky Tour Movie, came out in June 2020. It was the first musical documentary from Vietnam and was later available on Netflix worldwide.

In 2020, Tùng released two more songs, "Có chắc yêu là đây" and "Chúng ta của hiện tại." "Chúng ta của hiện tại" was the main song for his upcoming album, Chúng ta. Its music video won an award for Music Video of the Year.

In 2022, the music video for "There's No One at All" caused some discussion. In 2023, he released "Making My Way". In 2024, he released "Chúng ta của tương lai" and "Đừng làm trái tim anh đau".

Music Style

Sơn Tùng M-TP grew up listening to traditional Vietnamese folk music called Quan họ. This music style influenced how he sings. He also listened to artists like Quang Vinh, Chris Brown, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber. The Vietnamese underground hip hop scene and K-pop groups like Big Bang also inspired him.

His early songs mixed pop, contemporary R&B, and hip-hop. Later, he started using electronic dance music (EDM) in his songs, like "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau" (2016). Some of his songs also use traditional Vietnamese instruments. For example, "Lạc trôi" (2017) uses the đàn tranh and sáo. Because many of his early songs mentioned rain, people sometimes called him "the Rain Prince." Besides singing, Tùng also plays the piano and electronic keyboards.
