Sơn Tùng M-TP became very popular with his songs like "Cơn mưa ngang qua" (2012) and "Em của ngày hôm qua" (2013). Other big hits include "Chắc ai đó sẽ về", "Lạc trôi", and "Nơi này có anh". In 2017, he released his album M-tp M-TP and a book about his life called Chạm tới giấc mơ.

He worked with Văn Production and WePro Entertainment for four years. Then, in 2016, he started his own music company, M-TP Entertainment. Sơn Tùng M-TP has also done concert tours like the M-TP Ambition Tour (2015–2016) and the Sky Tour (2019). He starred in the 2014 movie Dandelion, which won him an award for Young Prominent Actor. He also appeared on the TV show The Remix. Many people call him a "Prince of V-pop" because he is so popular. He has won many awards, including an MTV Europe Music Award and a Mnet Asian Music Award. In 2018, Forbes Vietnam also included him in their 30 Under 30 list.

Life and Career

Early Life and Musical Start (1994–2010)

Nguyễn Thanh Tùng was born on July 5, 1994, in Thái Bình, Vietnam. His parents are Nguyễn Đức Thiện and Phạm Thị Thanh Bình. His mother was a traditional dancer and also worked as a makeup artist and owned a clothing store. Tùng has a younger brother, Nguyễn Việt Hoàng, who also started a music career in 2022.

His family found out he could sing when he was two. At eight, he joined a local arts group and learned to play the electronic keyboard. Even though his parents wanted him to focus on school, Tùng loved music. He often joined school talent shows.

In 2009, he and his friends formed a group called Over Band. They started writing songs and sharing them online. In 2010, a rap artist invited Tùng to join his hip hop group, Young Pilots. The group became popular in their hometown and online. Around this time, Tùng started using the stage name M-TP. It first stood for "Mr. Tùng Pình," a nickname from a friend. Now, he says it means "music," "tài năng" (talent), and "phong cách" (style).

Becoming Famous and Acting (2011–2015)

Tùng first wrote "Cơn mưa ngang qua" for his group, but then decided to record it himself. He released it online in August 2011. The song quickly became a huge hit, getting 1.7 million listens in just two months. It even won an award for Song of the Month.

In 2012, Tùng got into the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City, a top music school. He later took a break from school in 2014 to focus on his career and film a movie. In July 2012, he tried out for Vietnam Idol but didn't make it past the first round. In November 2012, he signed a contract with Văn Production. He then changed his stage name from M-TP to Sơn Tùng M-TP.

Between August and December 2013, Tùng released three more songs: "Nắng ấm xa dần", "Đừng về trễ", and "Em của ngày hôm qua". "Em của ngày hôm qua" made him even more famous. It got over 100 million listens in three months.

In June 2014, it was announced that Tùng would star in Dandelion. This movie was partly based on the life of another singer. The film was released in December 2014 and became one of the highest-earning Vietnamese movies ever. Tùng won a Golden Kite Prize for his acting in the film. He also sang two hit songs for the movie's soundtrack: "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" and "Không phải dạng vừa đâu".

TV Shows and Concerts (2015–2017)

In January 2015, Tùng joined The Remix, a TV music competition. He worked with a DJ and a music producer. His performances were very popular, but he left the show after six episodes due to health reasons. Two songs he performed on the show, "Thái Bình mồ hôi rơi" and "Khuôn mặt đáng thương", were later released.

In June 2015, Tùng sang "Tiến lên Việt Nam ơi!" to support Vietnam's team in the Southeast Asian Games. He also released other singles like "Ấn nút nhớ... Thả giấc mơ", "Âm thầm bên em", and "Buông đôi tay nhau ra". "Âm thầm bên em" won an award for Single of the Year.

In July, 8,000 tickets for his first big concert in Ho Chi Minh City, M-TP & Friends, sold out quickly. At the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards, Tùng won the Best Southeast Asian Act award. In late 2015 and early 2016, Tùng had his M-TP Ambition concert tour. He later described this tour as a learning experience.

In January 2016, he was a guest judge on The Remix. He also sang "Một năm mới bình an" for a holiday campaign. In April, Tùng won the Singer of the Year award at the Dedication Music Awards, becoming the youngest person to do so. He also won Favorite Male Artist at the Zing Music Awards.

Tùng released "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau" in August 2016. It was the most searched song on Google Vietnam that year. Due to some disagreements, Tùng left WePro Entertainment in December 2016.

He then started his own company, M-TP Entertainment. In early 2017, he released three new songs: "Lạc trôi", "Nơi này có anh", and "Bình yên những phút giây". The music videos for "Lạc trôi" and "Nơi này có anh" quickly reached 100 million views on YouTube. "Lạc trôi" won awards for Single of the Year and Favorite Music Video.

Sky Tour and New Music (2017–2019)

In April 2017, Sơn Tùng M-TP celebrated five years in music by releasing his album M-tp M-TP. This album had new versions of his old songs and was sold on a USB flash drive. In June, he performed at a festival in Bangkok, Thailand. The next month, he held another M-TP & Friends concert in Hanoi.

In September 2017, his book, Chạm tới giấc mơ, was released. It talks about his early life and experiences in the music industry. Ten thousand copies were sold in just two days. Tùng received many awards that year, including the Mnet Asian Music Award for Vietnamese Breakout Artist.

In May 2018, he released "Run Now" with a music video. This song won two Zing Music Awards for Music Video of the Year and Most Favorite Dance/Electronic Song. In July, he acted as a fictional version of himself in a short film called Chuyến đi của thanh xuân.

Tùng worked with famous rapper Snoop Dogg on the song "Give It to Me", released in July 2019. The music video also featured singer Madison Beer. It broke a record for Vietnamese music videos, getting 25.8 million views on YouTube in its first 24 hours.

From July to August 2019, Tùng went on his second big concert tour, Sky Tour. The shows in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi sold out. Fans and critics praised his performances and how he interacted with the audience.

Recent Works (2020–present)

A documentary film about the Sky Tour, called Sơn Tùng M-TP: Sky Tour Movie, came out in June 2020. It was Vietnam's first musical documentary and was later available on Netflix worldwide. A live album from the tour was also released.

Music Style

Sơn Tùng M-TP grew up listening to his grandparents sing Quan họ, a traditional Vietnamese folk music style. This influenced his singing. He also listened to artists like Quang Vinh, Chris Brown, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber. The Vietnamese underground hip hop scene and K-pop groups like Big Bang also inspired him. He has said that composer An Thuyên was a big influence on his music.

His early songs mix pop, contemporary R&B, and hip-hop. Later, he started using electronic dance music (EDM) in his songs, like "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau" (2016). Some of his music also uses traditional Vietnamese instruments. For example, "Lạc trôi" (2017) uses the đàn tranh and sáo. Because many of his early songs mentioned rain, he was sometimes called "the Rain Prince." Besides the electronic keyboard, Tùng also plays the piano.
