In 1976, the Sabah government set aside a large piece of land. This land was about 6,200 acres in Kg Nalapak, Ranau. It was given to a group called Rural Development Co-operation (KPD).

This land was then turned into a tea farm. On April 26, 1978, the farm officially became part of Sabah Tea. KPD helped fund and run the farm. The Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, officially opened the farm on February 19, 1984.

In 1987, Sabah Tea teamed up with two British companies. These were Tate & Lyle and the Commonwealth Development Corporation. This partnership helped the government save money. It also allowed Sabah Tea to compete better with other tea farms.

Since 1997, a company called Yee Lee Corporation Bhd has owned all of Sabah Tea. Yee Lee Corporation Bhd is from Ipoh, Perak. They are experts in making, selling, and exporting products. This helped Sabah Tea grow even more.
