In 1976, the Sabah state government set aside a large piece of land. This land was about 6,200 acres in Kg Nalapak, Ranau District. It was given to a group called Rural Development Co-operation (KPD).

The land was then turned into a tea farm. On April 26, 1978, this farm officially became part of Sabah Tea. KPD also gave money to help manage and run the farm.

The farm's official opening happened on February 19, 1984. The Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, was there to open it.

In 1987, Sabah Tea joined forces with two British companies. These were Tate & Lyle and the Commonwealth Development Corporation. This partnership helped the government reduce its financial costs. After this, Sabah Tea could compete better with other tea farms.

Since 1997, a company called Yee Lee Corporation Bhd has owned all of Sabah Tea. Yee Lee Corporation Bhd is from Ipoh, Perak. They are experts in making, selling, and exporting products both in Malaysia and around the world.
