Sabal pumos, also known as the royal palmetto, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the palm tree family, called Arecaceae.
Where the Royal Palmetto Grows
This special palm tree is found only in certain areas of central Mexico. It lives in the Balsas dry forests along the Balsas River. When a plant or animal is found only in one place, it is called endemic.
Sometimes, people also plant the royal palmetto in their gardens because it looks nice.

Protecting the Royal Palmetto
The Sabal pumos palm is facing a challenge: habitat loss. This means its natural home is shrinking or being destroyed. Because of this, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has put it on their Vulnerable species list. This list helps us know which plants and animals might disappear if we don't protect them.
