Sabina Yasmin (born September 4, 1954) is a very famous singer from Bangladesh. She is best known for singing in movies, which is called being a playback singer in Bengali cinema. She has won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer an amazing 14 times, which is a record! She has recorded over 1,500 songs for films and more than 10,000 songs in total.

The Government of Bangladesh has honored Yasmin with two very important awards: the Ekushey Padak in 1984 and the Independence Day Award in 1996.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Sabina Yasmin was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on September 4, 1954. Her family originally came from Satkhira. Her father, Lutfar Rahman, worked for the government, and her mother, Begum Mouluda Khatun, was also a singer. Sabina is the youngest of five sisters, and all of them are singers! Her older sisters include Farida Yasmin and Nilufar Yasmin.

Sabina learned her first song, Khokon Moni Shona, on a harmonium at home. In 1964, she started singing regularly on a radio show called Khela Ghar. A musician named Altaf Mahmud discovered her amazing voice. She began her career as a playback singer in 1967 with the song Modhu Jochnar Dipali for the film Agun Niye Khela. When she was a child, she and another singer, Shahnaz Rahmatullah, even won awards from President Ayub Khan.

Sabina Yasmin's Singing Career

Sabina Yasmin's big break came with the song Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy. After that, she worked with Altaf Mahmud on many films, including Anowara and Nayantara. She also sang with other famous musicians like Satya Saha and Khan Ataur Rahman.

Singing in the 1960s

Sabina Yasmin started her music journey in the 1960s. She sang for movies, radio, TV, and even for music records. She has been a big part of the Bangladeshi music scene since the 1970s.

Success in the 1970s

When Sabina Yasmin first joined the film industry, Shahnaz Rahmatullah was the most popular singer. But in 1970, the movie Jibon Theke Neya came out with Sabina's song "Eki Sonar Aloy." This song made her a leading singer. She also sang many patriotic songs, like "Sob Kota Janala" and "Swadhinata Tumi." In 1972, her song "Sudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy" from the film 'Abujh Mon' made her even more famous. She won her first Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1975 for her songs in Sujon Sokhi. She then won this award three years in a row: in 1978, 1979, and 1980.

Popularity in the 1980s

In the 1980s, Sabina Yasmin sang many hit songs such as "Koto Sadhonay Emon Bhagyo Mele" and "Shoto Jonomer Sadh." Her popularity grew so much that she even sang for Indian movies. In 1985, she sang two songs, "Cherona Cherona Ghaat" and "Jalpari," with the legendary singer Kishore Kumar for a movie made by both India and Bangladesh.

Achievements in the 1990s

Sabina Yasmin continued to win awards in the 1990s. She received National Awards in 1991 for Danga and in 1992 for Radha Krishna.

Continuing Hits in the 2000s

Even though new singers like Kanak Chapa became popular in the 2000s, Sabina Yasmin still sang many hit songs. She won another National Film Award for her beautiful version of a Tagore song, "Boroshar Prothom Dine," in the film Dui Duari (2000). In 2004, her song "Preme Poreche Mon" was a top hit. She earned her 12th National Film Award for 'Dui Noyoner Alo'.

New Collaborations in the 2010s

In the 2010s, Sabina Yasmin sang a duet with Imran, a winner of a singing competition. She also sang for many new actresses of that time. Her song "Premiker Buk Jeno Sukher Nodi" was very popular for many weeks.

Sabina Yasmin's Family Life

Sabina Yasmin has two children. Her daughter, Fairooz Yasmin (also known as Badhon), is a singer, and her son is named Srabon.

In July 2007, Sabina Yasmin faced a health challenge when she was diagnosed with a type of cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She had an operation and received treatment in Singapore. After about three and a half months, she returned to Bangladesh, feeling much better.
