Where is Sabinas Hidalgo?
Sabinas Hidalgo is in the northern part of Nuevo León. It sits at about 313 meters (1,027 feet) above sea level. This means it's higher than many places, but not as high as mountains.
Its Neighbors
The city shares its borders with several other places. To the north, it meets Lampazos. To the south, you'll find Salinas Victoria and Higueras. Vallecillo and Agualeguas are to the east. Finally, to the west, it borders Lampazos, Villaldama, and Salinas Victoria again.
The Story of Sabinas Hidalgo
Sabinas Hidalgo has a long and interesting past. It was officially started a long time ago.
How it Began
The town was first called Real de Santiago de las Sabinas. It was officially founded on July 25, 1693. General Ignacio de Maya was the person who started it. People had actually been living there since 1692, even before it was officially named.
A New Name and City Status
Later, the town's name was changed to Villa de Sabinas Hidalgo. This was done to honor Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. He was a very important priest and a leader in the Mexican War of Independence. He helped Mexico gain its freedom. In 1971, Sabinas Hidalgo became an official city, which was a big step!
