The Sableuse River is a river in the Matapedia Valley region of Quebec, Canada. It starts in the Sableuse ponds near Saint-Vianney. The river ends in Sableuse River Bay, which is part of Lake Matapedia.

This river flows through different areas called regional county municipalities (RCMs). These are like local government areas. The Sableuse River flows through:

  • La Matapedia Regional County Municipality: This includes the town of Saint-Vianney, Quebec and the area of Lac-Matapédia, Quebec.
  • La Matanie Regional County Municipality: This includes the town of Sainte-Paule.

The Sableuse River flows generally southwest. It passes through Sainte-Paule and reaches Lake Matapedia near Sayabec.

The river flows into Sableuse River Bay on the north side of Lake Matapedia. From there, the water flows east into the Matapedia River. The Matapedia River then flows southeast into the Restigouche River. Finally, the Restigouche River flows east into the Chaleur Bay, which opens up to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

What's in a Name? The Sableuse River's History

The name "Sableuse River" has been official since at least 1972. Before that, some people called it the Matane River. The Sableuse River Bay, which got its name in 2003, was also once known as the Matane River Bay.

Where Does the Sableuse River Flow?

The Sableuse River is located in the La Matapédia Regional County Municipality. This area is part of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region in Quebec. The river's source, the Sableuse ponds, are about 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) northwest of the village of Saint-Vianney.

Starting Point of the River

The Sableuse ponds, where the river begins, are on the west side of a road called "Chemin des Towagodi Lakes." This starting point is:

  • About 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) west of the Matane Wildlife Reserve.
  • About 24.8 kilometers (15.4 miles) southeast of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence coast.
  • About 14.9 kilometers (9.3 miles) from where the Sableuse River joins another body of water.

The River's Journey: How Far Does It Go?

From its source, the Sableuse River often makes many small bends and turns. It flows for about 23.5 kilometers (14.6 miles) through several sections:

  • For 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) to the west, until it meets the water flowing from a small lake.
  • Then, for 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) to the southwest, reaching a bridge on the 4th row road.
  • Next, for 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) southwest, where it meets water from two small lakes.
  • It continues for 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) southwest, until it joins the Inconnue River (Sableuse River) coming from the east.
  • After that, it flows 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) southwest, meeting water from Portage Lake, Chaud Lake, and Towago Lake.
  • Then, it goes 6.7 kilometers (4.2 miles) southward, until it reaches Crooked Creek from the northeast.
  • Finally, it flows 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) southwest, crossing Soucy Road, until it reaches its end.

Where the River Ends

The Sableuse River ends in an area called the Seignory of Lac-Matapédia. This is an unorganized territory near Sayabec. The river's water flows into Sableuse River Bay, which is part of Lake Matapedia. This meeting point is right in front of Matane Island. This end point is about 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) from the main outlet of Lake Matapedia.
