Sabra Johnson's Dance Journey
Starting Her Dance Path
Sabra Johnson began her official dance training when she was 16 years old. She trained at Dance Impressions in Bountiful, Utah. Her teachers were Kandee Allen and Vivian Colobella, a mother-daughter team. Later, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. There, she trained at the Dance Zone with Kaydee Francis and Jami Artiga.
Before she started dance, Sabra had a background in gymnastics. Her dance training includes jazz, ballet, and contemporary dance. She also knows some hip hop, modern, tap, and theater dance. Jazz is her favorite dance style. Before trying out for So You Think You Can Dance, Sabra had already been a dancer for three years. She also had a small role in the popular movie High School Musical. She was one of the skater dancers in the "Stick to the Status Quo" scene.
Competing on So You Think You Can Dance
On the first episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Sabra was paired with b-boy Dominic Sandoval. They danced together for five weeks. Each week, Sabra and her partner had to pick a dance style from a hat. They performed a disco dance in week one and a contemporary dance in week two. In week three, they danced a rumba. They did a hip hop routine in week four and a jive in week five. They were only in the bottom three couples once, which was in the first week. After five weeks, only ten dancers were left in the competition.
When Sabra made it to the top ten, she was separated from Dominic. This was because of the show's rules for the top 10 competition. In week 6, Sabra danced with Kameron Bink, a contemporary and hip hop dancer. They performed a contemporary routine. Kameron was eliminated the next day. In week 7, Sabra was paired with ballroom dancer Pasha Kovalev. They performed a Broadway routine and a quickstep. In week 8, Sabra danced with contemporary dancer Neil Haskell. They performed a jazz routine and a paso doble routine. After these dances, Sabra was announced as one of the top 4 finalists.
Throughout the season, judges praised Sabra for her passion and energy. They also loved her amazing talent, personality, strong dancing, and how well she could do different dance styles. In the end, Sabra received the most votes. She was crowned America's favorite dancer, beating Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and Lacey Schwimmer.
