Pogogyne zizyphoroides is a special type of flowering plant. It is part of the mint family. People often call it the Sacramento mesamint or Sacramento beardstyle.
This plant grows naturally in central and northern California. It is also found in southwestern Oregon. You can often spot it in places like vernal pools. These are seasonal pools of water that dry up later in the year. It also grows in the Central Valley and the California Coast Ranges.
What Does It Look Like?
The Sacramento mesamint is an annual herb. This means it lives for only one year. It also smells nice! The plant grows straight up. Its strong stem has a round, head-like cluster of flowers at the top. Sometimes, it has several flower clusters in a row.
Some flowers also grow where the leaves meet the stem. Each flower is shaped like a tube and has two "lips." It is usually less than a centimeter long. The flowers are purple, and sometimes they have white inside. Long, hairy green sepals surround each flower. Sepals are like small leaves that protect the flower bud.
