Saeed Jalili (Persian: سعید جلیلی) was born on September 6, 1965. He is an Iranian politician and diplomat. From 2007 to 2013, he was the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. This council helps make important decisions about Iran's safety.
Currently, he is a member of the Expediency Discernment Council. This council helps resolve disagreements between different parts of the government. He also used to be Iran's main negotiator for its nuclear program.
Before these roles, he was a deputy foreign minister. He also ran for president in 2013 and 2024 but did not win. In 2021, he withdrew from the election to support another candidate.
Jalili fought as a soldier in the Iran–Iraq War. He was injured and lost part of his right leg during the Siege of Basra. Because of this, he is sometimes called a "Living Martyr." He has a PhD in political science and teaches at Imam Sadiq University.

About Saeed Jalili
Early Life and Education
Saeed Jalili was born in 1965 in Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran. His father was a school principal. In 1992, he married Fatemeh Sajjadi, who is a doctor. They have one son named Sajjad. Jalili can speak English and Arabic.
He studied at Imam Sadeq University, where he earned a PhD in Political Science. His doctoral paper was about the political ideas of Islam found in the Quran. This paper later became a book called "The Foreign Policy of the Prophet (Prophet Muhammad)."
Military Service
After finishing his studies, Jalili joined the Basij volunteers. This group is part of the Revolutionary Guards. He fought in the Iran–Iraq War. In 1986, he was seriously injured during the fighting and lost the lower part of his right leg. Since 2000, he has taught political science at Imam Sadeq University.

Working in Government
After the war, Jalili started working as a university teacher. In 1989, he also began working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1995 to 1996, he was the director of the inspection office there.
In 2001, he became a senior director for policy planning. This role was in the office of Iran's top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In 2002, Jalili also became a member of the Supreme National Security Council.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
When Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president in 2005, Jalili was made deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs. He held this job until 2007. During this time, he also advised President Ahmadinejad.
On October 20, 2007, Jalili took over from Ali Larijani as the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. In this role, he was in charge of international talks about Iran's nuclear program. His time as secretary ended on September 10, 2013. After leaving this position, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, appointed him as a member of the Expediency Council.
Jalili is known for his strong views. He believes in Iran's nuclear program and its right to develop it. He is also known for wanting stronger ties with Russia and China.
Presidential Campaigns
2013 Presidential Election
Jalili ran for president in the 2013 elections. He announced his plan to run on March 22, 2013. His campaign slogan was "A Pleasant Life." He finished third in the election, receiving over 4 million votes. Hassan Rouhani won that election.
Shadow Cabinet Idea
After losing the 2013 election, Jalili suggested creating a "Shadow Cabinet." This idea was to help the government by pointing out problems and offering solutions. He held meetings to discuss how to improve things for the country. He explained that the Shadow Cabinet is not a political party. Instead, it's a way for people to follow developments and help the Islamic Revolution.
Later Presidential Elections
Jalili also ran in the 2021 presidential election. However, he later decided to withdraw from the race to support Ebrahim Raisi.
In May 2024, Jalili again registered to run for president in the 2024 presidential election. He came in second place in the first round of voting. He then went to a runoff election but was defeated by Masoud Pezeshkian.
