About Saeed Jalili
Saeed Jalili was born in 1965 in Mashhad, Iran. His father was a school principal. He married Fatemeh Sajjadi, a doctor, in 1992, and they have one son named Sajjad. Jalili knows both English and Arabic.
He earned his PhD in Political Science from Imam Sadegh University. His doctoral thesis was about Islamic political thought. After finishing his studies, he joined the Basij volunteers during the Iran–Iraq War. He was seriously injured in 1986, losing part of his right leg. Since 2000, he has taught political science at Imam Sadegh University.
Saeed Jalili's Career
After the war, Jalili started working as a university lecturer. In 1989, he also began working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1995 to 1996, he was the director of the inspection office there.
In 2001, he became a senior director for policy planning in the office of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He also became a member of the Supreme National Security Council in 2002.
Diplomatic Roles
When Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president in 2005, Jalili was appointed deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs. He held this role until October 2007. He also advised President Ahmadinejad during this time.
On 20 October 2007, Jalili took over from Ali Larijani as the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. In this role, he was in charge of international talks about Iran's nuclear program. His time as secretary ended on 10 September 2013. After this, the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, appointed him as a member of the Expediency Council.
His Political Beliefs
Jalili is a key figure in a group called "neo-principalists" in Iranian politics. He strongly believes in "velayat-e faqih". This is a core idea in Iran's political system, meaning that a senior Islamic religious leader should have the highest power in both politics and religion.
He has defended Iran's right to develop nuclear energy. He believes Iran's economic problems are caused by international sanctions. He also has strong opinions about other countries and supports closer ties with Russia and China.
Role in Foreign Policy
As Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Jalili helped coordinate Iran's policies in the region. He worked to strengthen Iran's relationships with various groups and governments in the Middle East.
He has 18 years of experience in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was head of the Inspection Department and later deputy foreign minister for European and American Affairs.
Leading Nuclear Talks
A major part of Jalili's work as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council was leading the negotiations about Iran's nuclear technology. He was known for his firm approach in these talks. When Hassan Rouhani became president in August 2013, Jalili was replaced by Ali Shamkhani.
Other Important Roles
After leaving the Supreme National Security Council, Jalili was appointed by Ali Khamenei as a member of the Expediency Discernment Council in 2013. This council helps resolve disagreements between different parts of the government.
In 2014, Khamenei also appointed Saeed Jalili as a member of the Strategic Council of Foreign Relations. He is currently the head of this council.
Presidential Campaigns
2013 Presidential Election
Jalili ran for president in the 2013 Iranian presidential election. He announced his candidacy on 22 March 2013. He was supported by the Front of Islamic Revolution Stability party. His campaign slogan was "A Pleasant Life." He came in third place in the election, behind Hassan Rouhani and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
The Shadow Cabinet Idea
After his defeat in the 2013 election, Jalili suggested a plan called the Shadow Cabinet. The idea was to help the government by pointing out problems and offering solutions. He held meetings to discuss ways to improve things for the country. He explained that the Shadow Cabinet is not a political party but a way for people to follow developments and help the Islamic Revolution.
2021 Presidential Election
Jalili was considered a possible candidate for the 2021 Iranian presidential election. However, he withdrew from the race before the election to support Ebrahim Raisi.
2024 Presidential Election
In May 2024, Jalili registered to run for president in the 2024 Iranian presidential election. In the first round of the election on 29 June, he received 40.38% of the votes, placing second. This meant he went to a runoff election against Masoud Pezeshkian. He received support from other candidates who had dropped out or placed lower. However, he was defeated by Masoud Pezeshkian in the runoff election.
