Sagmariasus verreauxi is a type of spiny lobster. It is also known as the Eastern rock lobster. This amazing creature lives in the waters around northern New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands, the Chatham Islands, and along the coast of Australia, from Queensland down to Tasmania.
It is probably the longest decapod crustacean in the world. This means it is a type of animal with a hard shell, ten legs, and a body divided into segments. It can grow up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) long! That's as long as a big ruler!
About the Eastern Rock Lobster
The Eastern rock lobster has many common names in English. Some of these names include Australian crayfish, common crayfish, eastern rock lobster, and green rock lobster. People also call it the packhorse crayfish or packhorse lobster.
In the Māori language, this lobster is called pawharu.
Its Scientific Name
The scientific name for this lobster is Sagmariasus verreauxi. It used to be part of a different group called Jasus. However, scientists moved it to its own special group, called a monotypic genus, named Sagmariasus.
This change happened because the Sagmariasus verreauxi has a smooth abdomen (belly part). Other Jasus species have bumps or patterns on their abdomens.
The name Sagmarasius comes from two parts. The first part, sagmarion, is a Greek word that means "packhorse". The second part is the genus name Jasus. This name was chosen because one of its common names is "packhorse crayfish".
