History of Saint Georges
Saint Georges was settled a long time ago, even before the year 1730. It grew around the St. Georges Creek. A tavern, which is like an old inn or restaurant, was built there in 1735. The King's Highway, an important road, was built through the community in 1762.
Changes to Town Status
Saint Georges became an official town in 1825. However, the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal later divided the town. A new bridge was built that bypassed the town center. Because of these changes, the town asked the state to remove its official town status in 1940. Today, groups like the North Saint Georges Civic Association help represent the community.
Bridges and the Canal
The Senator William V. Roth Jr. Bridge is located just west of Saint Georges. It is a special type of bridge called a cable-stayed bridge. This bridge opened in 1995. It replaced an older bridge, the St. Georges Bridge, which still carries U.S. Route 13 over the community and the canal.
The 1939 Bridge Accident
Before the current St. Georges Bridge, there was a lift bridge in the middle of town. This lift bridge was built in 1923. On January 10, 1939, a large cargo ship called the Waukegan crashed into it. The ship lost control and hit the bridge's north tower. This caused the bridge to collapse. Sadly, two people, the bridge tender and the bridge electrician, died in the accident.
Earlier Bridges
Even before the lift bridge, another small pedestrian swing bridge crossed the canal. This bridge was located over the old Saint Georges Locks. It was destroyed when the locks were removed. This happened when the canal was made wider and deeper.
