Saint Joseph is a ghost town located in Clark County, Nevada. A ghost town is a place where people used to live, but now it is mostly empty. Saint Joseph was built on the east side of the Muddy River. This area is part of the Moapa Valley.

History of Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph was started in 1865. It was built on the east bank of the Muddy River. This spot was about five miles north of a town called Overton, Nevada. The town was named after Joseph W. Young. He was one of the first people to settle there. He was also the son of Brigham Young, a famous leader.

A post office was opened in Saint Joseph on August 26, 1867. At that time, the area was part of Paiute County, Arizona. In 1868, the original town of Saint Joseph was burned down. Everyone moved to a new place called West Point. This new place is now known as Logandale, Nevada. The name "Saint Joseph" and its post office moved there too.

Why Saint Joseph Was Abandoned

Like other towns started by Mormons in the Moapa Valley, the new Saint Joseph was left empty in 1871. This happened because of a disagreement over taxes with the state of Nevada. The post office closed in October 1871.

However, the post office opened again in May 1876. Later, in 1880, many Mormon settlers returned to Overton. Because of this, the Saint Joseph post office closed for good in November 1883. Its operations were moved to Overton.

Saint Joseph Today

Today, the original site of Saint Joseph is empty land. There are no buildings left.
