Salamanca is a small town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 470 people lived there. The town gets its name from José de Salamanca y Mayol, a Spanish investor. He helped fund the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, a local train line.

The town of Salamanca is located in the southern part of Cattaraugus County. The city of Salamanca is actually inside the town. This city is also part of the Allegany Indian Reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians. This reservation splits the town into two parts.

History of Salamanca Town

Historically, this area was home to Native American groups like the Wenrohronon and Eriehronon. However, the Seneca Nation drove them out in the 1650s during the Beaver Wars. The Seneca were a powerful group in the Iroquois Confederacy. They controlled much of western New York.

European Americans did not settle here until around 1815. This was after the American Revolution. The Seneca Nation had to give up some of their lands to the United States and New York. Many early settlers were white people who lived on Native American land with permission from the tribes.

The area was mostly farms and lumber businesses. It was not very crowded until four railroads were built. These railroads leased land, much of it swampy, from the Seneca Nation. They created a central hub, which grew into the city of Salamanca.

The town of Salamanca was created in 1854. It was formed from a part of the town of Little Valley. At first, it was called "Bucktooth." This name came from a famous Seneca person who lived there. You can still find roads called "Bucktooth Run" in the area. In 1869, the town of Red House was formed. It took away the southern part of Salamanca. In 1870, the community of Salamanca started to grow. It became a village, and later, a city.
