Saltfleetby is a small village in Lincolnshire, England. It is located on the coast, close to the North Sea. The village is about 7 miles (11 km) east of Louth and 10 miles (16 km) north of Mablethorpe.
In 2011, a count of people called the 2011 Census showed that 568 people lived in Saltfleetby. Some local people call the village "Soloby."
About Saltfleetby
For a long time, until 1999, Saltfleetby was actually three separate areas. These were Saltfleetby St Peter, Saltfleetby All Saints, and Saltfleetby St Clement. Each area was named after its main church.
South of Saltfleetby St Peter, you can find a tiny group of houses called Three Bridges. The village has a wooden hall for community events. There are also fishing lakes with a place to camp and a small shop. You can also visit The Prussian Queen, which is a local pub.
The Saltfleetby Gas Field is an area where natural gas is found. It is located north of North End Lane. This gas field is actually part of the nearby village of South Cockerington.
Saltfleetby During World War II
During the Second World War, many defenses were built in and around Saltfleetby. These were put in place to protect the area from a possible invasion.
Experts like William Foot have studied these defenses. They included many hidden landmines between the Great Eau river and the sand dunes. There were also many small, strong concrete forts called pillboxes. The local Home Guard also had a shelter near The Prussian Queen pub.
Nature and Wildlife
A special part of Saltfleetby's coastline is a salt marsh. This is a muddy, grassy area that is often covered by seawater. This salt marsh is part of the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve.
This nature reserve is a very important place for wildlife. It has sand dunes and different types of marshes. Some marshes have saltwater, and others have freshwater.
Amazing Animals and Plants
The Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes reserve is one of only about 60 places in the whole UK where you can find the natterjack toad. This is a special type of toad that loves sandy areas.
Many plants that can grow in salty soil, called halophyte plants, live here. You can also find beautiful wild orchids. Further north, in the Donna Nook nature reserve, Grey seals come to have their babies. This area is within the nearby parishes of Saltfleet and North Somercotes.
