Sam Clancy Jr. (born May 4, 1980) is an American former professional basketball player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Cleveland Charge. This team plays in the NBA G League. Sam Clancy Jr. was signed by the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers. However, he never played in a game for either team. He was injured while with the 76ers and was later released by the Blazers. He is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 260 pounds. He used to play as a forward and center.

Sam Clancy Jr.'s Early Basketball Journey
Family Background and High School Success
Sam Clancy Jr.'s father, Sam Clancy Sr., was also a talented athlete. His dad played basketball at the University of Pittsburgh. He then played American football as a defensive end in the NFL. He played for teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns. Sam Jr. was born in Pittsburgh while his father was still playing college basketball.
When his father played for the Browns, the family lived near Cleveland. Sam Jr. went to St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. He became a star player there. In 1998, he and his teammate Steve Logan led St. Edward to win the Ohio State basketball championship. Sam Jr. graduated in 1998. In 2009, St. Edward High School honored him by adding him to their Athletic Hall of Fame.
College Career at USC
After high school, Clancy attended the University of Southern California (USC). He studied sociology and played basketball for the Trojans. After his junior year in 2001, he thought about entering the 2001 NBA draft. However, he decided not to hire an agent and withdrew his name before the draft.
In 2002, during his senior year, he was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year. He was also chosen as a second-team All-American by the Associated Press. Sam Clancy Jr. finished his college career as USC's all-time leader in blocked shots with 195. He was also third in points scored (1,657) and second in rebounds (839).
In March 2016, Clancy was honored again. He was inducted into the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Hall of Honor. This ceremony took place before the championship game of the 2016 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament.

NBA Draft and Early Challenges
After college, Sam Clancy Jr. was chosen in the 2002 NBA draft. The Philadelphia 76ers picked him as the 45th player overall in the second round. Sadly, he missed his entire first season because of a knee injury. The 76ers released him before the next season started. Sam Clancy Jr. never played an official game in the NBA. He is one of nine players from the 2002 NBA Draft who did not play in the league.
Playing in Other Leagues
After his time with the NBA teams, Clancy played in other professional leagues. He played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) with the Idaho Stampede. He also played in Europe. During the 2004–05 CBA season, Clancy received many awards. He was named the league's Most Valuable Player. He was also the Defensive Player of the Year and the All-Star Game MVP. He was selected for the All-CBA First Team and the All-Defensive Team.
In July 2005, Clancy was the first player picked in the All-American Professional Basketball League draft. He was drafted by the Mankato Mallards. However, he never played for them because the league stopped operating later that year. In October 2005, the Portland Trail Blazers signed him to a one-year contract. But they released him before he played any games for them. He also played for the Fayetteville Patriots in the NBA D-League and the Yakima Sun Kings in the CBA.
Sam Clancy Jr. also played basketball in many countries overseas. He played for teams like Iraklis Thessaloniki in Greece. He played for Cocodrilos de Caracas in Venezuela. He was also with the Incheon ET Land Black Slamer in South Korea. In Russia, he played for teams such as UNICS Kazan and CSK VVS Samara. He played in Spain for Grupo Capitol Valladolid and in France for Le Mans Sarthe Basket.
In November 2009, Clancy signed with Bnei HaSharon in the Israeli League. In the summer of 2010, he joined Hapoel Jerusalem. In November 2011, Sam signed with Atenas de Córdoba in the Argentinian League. After that, he became a regular player in Argentina's Liga Nacional de Basquet. He was even chosen as the best foreign player for the 2014–2015 season.
Sam Clancy Jr.'s Coaching Career
On October 24, 2023, Sam Clancy Jr. started a new chapter in his basketball career. He was hired as an assistant coach by the Cleveland Charge. This team is part of the NBA G League.
