Life Story of a Dutch Artist
Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten first learned to paint from his father, Dirk van Hoogstraten. He lived in Dordrecht until around 1640. After his father died, Samuel moved to Amsterdam. There, he joined the art studio of the famous painter Rembrandt.
Soon after, Samuel became an independent artist. He started his own career as a master painter. He was especially known for painting portraits of people.
Travels and Later Life
Later in his life, Samuel traveled a lot. In 1651, he visited cities like Vienna, Rome, and London. After his travels, he returned to Dordrecht. He got married in 1656. He also held an important job as the head of the local mint, which made coins.
Amazing Artworks and Etchings

Many of Van Hoogstraten's paintings still exist today. They show that he tried out different art styles over time. For example, a portrait from 1645 looks very much like Rembrandt's work. This painting is now in a collection in Vienna.
He continued to paint in this style until about 1653. One famous painting from this time shows a bearded man looking out of a window. You can see this painting in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Samuel was also very good at painting trompe-l'œil still lifes. These are paintings that trick your eye into thinking they are real objects.
Different Painting Styles
A painting from 1652 shows a view of the Vienna Hofburg palace. This artwork proves his skill in painting buildings. Other paintings, like "Lady Reading a Letter" in The Hague, look similar to the style of Pieter de Hooch. Another example is "Lady Consulting a Doctor" in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. One of his last known works is a portrait of Mathys van den Brouck, painted in 1670.
Etchings and Students
Samuel also created many etchings. Some of the metal plates he used for these prints are still around. His own self-portrait, which he etched when he was fifty years old, can still be seen.
Samuel van Hoogstraten also taught many students. Some of his famous pupils included his younger brother Jan van Hoogstraten, Aert de Gelder, Cornelis van der Meulen, and Godfried Schalcken.
Writing About Art and More
Samuel van Hoogstraten was famous for being a painter, a poet, and a writer. Besides painting and managing the mint, he spent time writing.
His Big Art Book
His most important work is a book about painting. It's called Introduction to the Academy of Painting, or the Visible World. The original Dutch title is Inleyding tot de hooge schoole der schilderkonst: anders de zichtbaere werelt. This book was published in Rotterdam in 1678.
It is one of the longest and most detailed books about painting from the 1600s in the Netherlands. The book talks about how paintings can persuade people and create illusions. It also discusses how painters should act and how art relates to philosophy. Samuel used ideas from many old and new writers in his book. He also included ideas about art that were popular in Dutch art studios at the time.
Samuel wrote this book as a follow-up to an earlier art book. That book was called Het Schilder-Boeck by Karel van Mander. One of Samuel's students, Arnold Houbraken, later wrote a book called The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters. This book included a biography of Samuel. Most of what we know about Samuel van Hoogstraten today comes from this biography.
Poems and Plays
Samuel van Hoogstraten also wrote sonnets (a type of poem) and tragedy plays. We even know some of the famous sayings of Rembrandt because Samuel wrote them down.
