Early Life and Education
Samuel Troilius was born on May 22, 1706. His birthplace was a parish called Stora Skedvi in Sweden. His father, Olof Troilius, was a vicar, which is a type of priest in the Church of Sweden. His mother was Helena Gangia.
Samuel went to Uppsala University in 1724. He studied hard and became an assistant professor of Greek and Roman literature in 1734. In 1736, he was ordained, meaning he officially became a minister. By 1740, he was a priest.
Career and Achievements
In 1740, Samuel moved to Stockholm. There, he became a court chaplain, serving the royal family. The next year, he became the confessor to the Swedish Royal Family. This meant he was a spiritual advisor to the king and queen.
In 1751, Samuel was chosen to be the Bishop of Västerås. Everyone agreed he was the right person for the job. Then, in 1760, he was elected Archbishop of Uppsala. This was a very important role, as the Archbishop of Uppsala is the leader of the Church of Sweden. In the same year, he also became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which is a group of smart people who study science.
Family Life
Samuel Troilius was married twice. His first marriage was to Anna Elisabeth Angerstein in 1740. His second marriage was to Brita Elisabet Silfverstolpe in 1751.
In 1756, Samuel and his children were given a special honor. They were made nobles and changed their family name to von Troil. His son, Uno von Troil, also became the Archbishop of Uppsala later on, following in his father's footsteps.
