History of San Antonio

Long ago, about thirteen thousand years ago, nomadic hunters and gatherers were the first people to live in this part of Chile. They moved around, hunting animals and gathering plants for food.

San Antonio has faced some big challenges. In 1985, a strong earthquake hit Santiago, and it destroyed about 80% of San Antonio. Another earthquake in 2010 also affected the city's port. The port had to shut down for a short time but was back to working almost normally within a few days.

Population and People

According to a census in 2002, San Antonio had 87,205 people living there. Most of these people (about 95.7%) lived in the city areas, while a smaller number lived in the countryside. The population grew by about 11.6% between 1992 and 2002.
